Need help picking my next rod

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am currently looking for a new rod for the new Shimano Citica baitcaster i bought.  My problem is that I just bought a new spinning setup and i do not want to buy another rod that will do the same thing.

I have a Diawa Capricorn reel with a St. Croix Avid AS60MF rod.

The goal is to have a setup that will be best for fishing worms/jigs and the other setup to use for spinnerbaits, crankbaits, etc.

I am thinking i should use the St croix I currently have for spinnerbaits/crankbaits and buy my baitcast rod for worms/jigs.

I am looking to spend less than $130 on a rod. I am not sure if i should go with a St Croix, Falcon, maybe a Browning midas, or this that I saw on another post in this section: http://www.histackleboxshop.com/G-Loomis-Jig-Worm-Bass-Casting-BCR852-Mossyback-p/sale-gloomis-bcr852-mossyback.htm

If there are any other suggestions for my new setup, please let me know!  Thanks!

You might find the Avids on sale. One of our members picked up a

couple last week for $79! I would recommend either a AC68MXF or

AC66MHF. Both of these rods will match up nicely with your Citica.

I have looked online and at my local Dicks sporting goods, but i could not find the avids for less than $130 (at Reeds online)...any other places I could look??  maybe some links?

I don't recall whether it was Dick's or Sportman's Warehouse, but the close-out is probably just about complete. The deal at Reed's was sweet at first, but now it's not. Maybe someone will pop in with a tip on where to go now.

Fenwick HMG (GT66MH) 6'6" MH/F.  MSRP is $129 but they tackle shops near me sell them for $109.  Fantastic rods.

Team All Star IM10 (TAS 786C) 6'6' MH/F.  Around $100.  Very sensitive and well made rods.

All Star American Classic (AC WR1) 6'6' MH/F.  Around $90.  Identical performance to the IM10, and brute strong.  On top of that, they are gorgeous rods.  My Shimano Curados look great on them.

For St. Croix rods you might want to contact Glenn at Wolf Tackle (wolftackle.com) and see if he has any avids in the power and action you are looking for. I just ordered an avid crankbait rod from him for $128. These are last years models that he is getting rid of. These are still excellent rods IMO.

I'll second either of those All Star rods.  Great bang for the buck.  Solid rods with good warranties.

Go to the Sportsman's warehouse website and use the store locator to find a store. Call them and have them check all the stores in the chain's inventory on the Avid rod you want. I bet one of the stores still has one. They still have a few to choose from at the closest store to me. They are $110 for most of them, I think. Some are a little more, and a few of the smaller/lighter ones are $99. That is how I got my Fuego baitcasters at the closeout price. Had them shipped to me from 3 states away.

Thanks for the advice guys.  Since I have not heard anything specific, I am going to double check: Should my AS60MF rod be the spinnerbait, crankbait rod and this new one will be used for jigs/worms?

My gameplan for the new rod is to wait and check this month/next month for any good sales and try to save myself a few bucks on a good rod.  From what i have read here over the last year or so, it seems like people are in agreement that 2 real good setups beat 6+ average setups.

If it was me, I would get something heavier than what you have. Something that will allow for, on the high end, 3/4 to 1 oz lures. Fast action. The actions might not be ideal for everything you throw, but you will not be limited to smaller rigs. From there, if you find in the future you really like throwing cranks a lot, then pick up a nice cranking rod. You can alway's use the same reel, just switch it between rods. If you find your really into spinners and worms, then picking up an extra fast action rod would be in order.

If your set on picking up a specialized rod now, then you should either get a moderate action rod for cranks, or an extra fast action rod for jigs, worms, and spinners. IMO, cranks are a special technique that should have a moderate action rod. Same as above, a rod that will cover, on the high end, 3/4 to 1oz lures will cover most cranks you would want to throw.

I'd go for the St.Croix Avid AS68MXF.  Great rod for soft plastic.  I picked mine up at Dicks for $65 after coupons and a clearance discount.  The Dicks by me is sold out but you might ask a salesman their if they could order you one from another store.  I just picked up the last one they had (ASMHF66) for $65.  The salesman offered to check for more but I'm good for now.  :;)

For St. Croix rods you might want to contact Glenn at Wolf Tackle (wolftackle.com) and see if he has any avids in the power and action you are looking for. I just ordered an avid crankbait rod from him for $128. These are last years models that he is getting rid of. These are still excellent rods IMO.

d**n you! I just got off the phone with Glenn and bought a 7' MH Moderate Action for my deep cranking. I have bought 6 Avids in 3 months all but one were discounted. Thanks for the heads up but now Im done!

I have never seen that rod......

But sweet,

Your Avatar does rock.

I think i am just going to spend some extra $ and get this rod:

Does anyone own one of these? good rod for what I am trying to do?

I have the spinning version of that rod in GLX. It's perfect for throwing Senko's, other worms, various other plastics, light jigs, and small spinners.
