What line goes with what bait?!

Featured Replies

Can someone post all of the do's and don'ts of fishing specific lures with specific lines?

For example, I know some line sinks and some doesnt, this effects the lure presentation.  Which lures should you use with Florocarbon?  What about Mono?  Howabout braid?

What line should I, and shouldn't I use when fishing Cranks, Jerks, Soft Plastics, Buzzbaits & Jigs?

Also, when is using braid a bad Idea?

Thanks!

Spinning tackle: Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6

Baitcasting gear: Ultra Soft #12

This line is very user friendly, but otherwise will have no particular impact on any lures you choose to fish.

In the end it all comes down to personal preference.  Two people can look at an attribute of a line.  One might call it an advantage, the other might call it a disadvantage.

The only two things I do that are ABSOLUTES for me regarding line are:

1)  No braid with any baits with treble hooks.

2)  Braid as my main line while c-rigging

I personally use Mono for 90% of my fishing b/c I'm comfortable with it. I like the added stretch of mono when fishing trebel hook lures like cranks, b/c you're less likely to rip the bait away from the fish.

I use 15 lb P-Line CXX for most BC applications and 8lb P-Line CX or McCoy Mean Green for all my spinning applications.

I will use 50lb Power Pro Braid when fishing a hollow frog or Ribbit. I will also use braid if Flipping stained water with real thick cover or flippin matted grass. The braid cuts through the grass and has virtualy no stretch, so you can turn her head and horse the fish out of the thick stuff. I also like braid on my main line for deep Carolina Rigging b/c of the feel.

According to "the book" you should use flourocarbon when fishing Senko type baits, b/c the line sinks. It is also recommended for most deep water "feel" presentations like dragging a big football jig or finesse fishing deep. I have tried it, and I just don't like the way Flouro handles. I do use it for leader material in clear water occasionally.

I use flouro with my jigs, braid for spinners and buzzbaits, and mono

for cranks and topwaters.

do you consider fireline braid?  i love the stuff because of it's strength. i like buying expensive cranks, but hate losing them!

Jigs and soft plastics get fluorocarbon (Berkley Pro-Grade) most of the time, while spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and all other moving baits get Pline CXX.  The Berkley Pro-Grade for the first time combines the qualities of being soft and abrasion resistant.  However, I can only wish any fluoro had the strength and toughness of CXX;  the stuff is just stupid strong.  If you complain about the memory of CXX, Burley will ask you (in the words of Borat) if your vaujine hurts  :( 8-).

If I am fishing anything with treble hooks I use a copolymer. I want the line to have stretch. If it is a plastic, jig, or spinnerbait I use Seaguar florocarbon. I don't use floro for topwaters.

What about jerkbaits like pointers.  I can see the advantage of using both in this situation.  Im leaning towards fluorocarbon as of now.

I have been considering making that exception.

I like to use a co-polymer or mono with lures that feature trebles. Fish often come un buttoned from trebles. Line stretch decreases the chances of this happening. Plus alot of lures such as crankbaits and spooks require some hesitation after the strike. Cutting down on sensitivity aids to this.

On the other hand floro is supposed to get jerkbaits down a little deeper.

My thoughts exactly. I think I am going to go with the fluoro and use a moderate tip and try to be aware that I need to take it easy on hooksets.

I will let you know how it goes after my first tournament on the 8th.

I pretty much fish Flouro for everything but top water, and for that I use mono.
