Wow.I was going to buy a good oil and grease for my reels. I was astonished. $4.99 to $7.99 for .75 oz of oil or grease. There should be some tried and true lubricants that work well and  are reasonably priced.    Anyone care to chime in on this and tell us what you use and are happy with that is reasonably priced?

.75 oz will last forever.  Suck it up and spend a few bucks on some decent lube.  

Micro is right but if you want to go cheaper for some reason then go to the Dollar store and buy a quart of Mineral oil for less than a dollar and your all set. You will need some kind of a small bottle to put it in or or an eye dropper. Mike

More importantly, don't just add something if you aren't absolutely sure what you're doing.  Adding grease where oil should be or oil where grease should be can ruin your reel.

Seek the advice or service of a professional before opening your reel.

ABU Silicote oil and grease are reasonably priced and good quality lubricants.

When you pay $150.00 - $500.00 for a reel... $3.99 to keep the bearings running right isn't anything...You can go out and buy any kind of oil, and grease, but the viscosity of (the oil especially) will be the problem in your reel. So buck up and do the right thing. Less is more, and, quality oil and grease is best.

This discussion relates directly to a subject that is one of my pet peeves regarding hobbies and specialty products.  There is no end to the examples from almost any hobby you might have.  Manufacturers take a commonly available product, repackage it so it appears targeted at a specific application and then jack up the price to multiples of the original product.

No doubt there are many quality lubricants out there that cost a fraction of what the "reel lubricants" cost.  Also no doubt that the "reel lubricants" are the same products you can get under other labels for a fraction of the cost.  They are just relabeled and repriced.

I agree that you should make sure you use a quality product to keep your expensive reels maintained.  But it also annoys me to no end that they expect me to pay a ridiculous markup for something just because they gave it a different name. >

To the op Just buy it it's a few dollars, if you say don't drink a coffee for two days or smoke a pack of cigs, or buy a 6 pack you can buy it : This is not just directed to you i like quantum hot sauce and i noticed improved casting on one of my reels

As I look at my rod rack I count 9 bait casters and 8 spinning out fits. Probably 8 0r 10 years ago I bought a tube of Hot Sauce grease and a tube of their oil. I decided to oil wasn't special and shortly after I bought a tube of Rocket fuel. On the level wind screw and crank handle knobs I just use a drop of the stuff that comes in one of those plastic tubes. I figure I have a 10 year supply.

In reel lubrication less is better.

I got the Ardent Reel butter kit from BPS. It came w/ degreaser, lube, grease, swabs and a brush. I should've returned mine b/c the stuff always leaked into the kit. And i saw that the lube kept leaking so now i just keep them out of the case. If you get a good kit that has no leaking its really really helpful.

I've read your threads in the past and you said you were not a fan of Hot Sauce, but I don't recall why. Could you explain ?

For the record, I've never used it myself, I was just curious.

I have a ton of reasons I don't like it, the just of it is.... 8-)

I used it in my shop on Quantums only back when they first released it. It is not what they claim it to be. It dyes all the parts it touches red, leaving you to think that the oil or grease is there when in fact it isn't, it rinses out easily in a rain or if the reel gets dunked, the grease gets slung off of the main and pinion gears, with normal cranking speeds and does no good at all in that area of the reel..

I have since stopped using it (even in PT reels), and have never had a complaint.

Just received a RevoSX yesterday that fell into the water, angler cleaned the reel and re-lubricated it with Hot Sauce...

Now the reel feels and sounds like it was never lubricated.

This is the result of Hot Sauce lubrication....

Thanks for the reply. I'm a diesel mechanic, so I understand where you're coming from. I've seen the results of improper/poor quality lubrication. It always equals lot's of $$$$ out of the customer's pocket.

Quantum Hot Sauce is the best I have found.

I have never used hot sauce, I use the oils that are sent in the reel package from Abu and have been happy so far.

That being said ReelMech recently serviced a used reel I bought(Revo S) and it feels better than any of my other Revos did, even brand new out of the box!  If he speaks, I listen.

I have used Reel Mechanic's lubes for about a year now and I really have had good results.  As good as any that I have needed.

I put hot sauce in every thing but fishing reels

I purchased the Ardent reel cleaning kit you can pick it up at BPS for about 20 bucks. I comes with everything you need to clean and lube your reels. Oil, Grease, degreaser, lint free cloth, brush, lint free sponge tips, and screw driver. Should last a long time!! It is a real bargain.
