line recommendations

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a little help to match up the best type of line for the below applications.  I don't necessarily need brands, rather type and test (i.e. 14 lb mono, 20 braid, etc).

1.  Spinning reel for shallow crankbaits (3-8 ft cranks)

2.  Spinning reel for live bait rig (leaches/crawlers on lindy rigs)

3.  Casting reel for Carolina rigs

Thanks in advance.

Shallow cranks : 15lb Fluoro

Livebait rig: 6-10lb Fluoro depending on heavy the cover is

Carolina Rigs: 50lb Braid w/ a 14lb mono or fluoro leader

For the cranks, I'd go with 8-10lb. copoly.

For the Lindy Rigs, I'd go with a 2/10 or 4/15 super line, with a 6-10lb fluoro leader.  I know you said you didn't need brands, but I feel obligated to mention Power Pro.  I've been using it for years on my Lindy Rig rod, and I absolutley love it.

For the C-rigs, I'd go with a 30-50lb super line, and a 10-14lb leader.

Spinning tackle:  Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test)

Baitcasting gear: Ultra Soft #12 (19.5 lb test)

8-)

This is a pretty redneck answer from a Yankee but I always use 10lb copolymer on my baitcasters, plain, simple, and casts a mile I guess if you were throwing those Carolina Rigs into some heavy cover and really had to yank a bass out the 10lb test might not do.

However, that said.  Living in Illinois our state record is 13.5 lbs, and you rarely hear of anyone catching bass in the 7+ range up here in Chicagoland.   I'd have to hook up a bass plus 5 lbs of slop to put my line into any major stress situation.
