New Spinnerbait setup, Looking for some advice

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Recently recieved some money for birthday/high school graduation and the amount that is not going into the bank I'll be using to purchase a new spinnerbait rig. I'd like to know what type of line is best for spinnerbaits, I've been using braid in the past but that's only because I've been fishing them with my heavy duty froggin' rod. I'll be buying a Shimano Citica paired up with a Loomis Spinnerbait rod or a Carrot Stix.  I fish spinnerbaits pretty much everywhere including through lily pads and in both murky and clear water. What type of line do you use and what lb test is best suited for nearly all applications?

Thank you

I second the Trilene Big Game. Spinnerbaits are still my favorite lure. I throw them in everything, from super clear depths to shallow weedy mess. Big Game has never let me down. I use both 12# and 15# depending on where the bait is getting thrown.

I use Big Game as well but unless I am fishing the bait deep and need it to stay down I use 20lb regardless of the water color.  If I am fishing a small spinner bait (1/4 or smaller) or wanting to get the bait down deeper in the water column than 5' or so I will go to 15lb Big Game.  I have used these set ups to catch fish with clarity as good as 7 - 8' visability.

Like others I use Big Game in 12 or 15lb 95% of the time. As far as rods look at the Falcon spinnerbait series as that is what I use and like it.

P-Line Evo 15lb....Great stuff...I have it on all of my BC reels... No reason for braid in this situation...Try the evo, great color, great strength, great knot strength, and its a copolymer (less visible, abrasive, stretch..etc.)

12 pound flouro for general waters, but if it's brush, laydowns, etc., I'll bump it up to 15.

I primarily use 17lb P-Line CXX because my spinnerbait rod doubles as my buzzbait rod and I like the strength for heavier cover and the added buoyancy, which makes it easier to keep buzzbaits up. If I only used it for spinnerbaits I'd probably go with 15lb CXX, but I don't think I'm missing any strikes with 17lb CXX. I do use 15lb CXX earlier in the year when there isn't any grass and I'm not throwing buzzbaits.
