Reel Handle Preference Poll - Spinning and Casting

Featured Replies

I prefer LH for both reel types, but can now fish "opposite" handed if I had to.

No need to explain why you prefer what you prefer unless you want to, as I am sure most of us have told to the point of nausea.

However, I thought it would be interesting to see the break down for the members here. My guess is that option 3 is going to be the majority.

Cast right handed and reel right handed regardless of the type of reel.

What's really odd is that I write left handed.  Just goes to show the power of learning a behavior.  I could probably get used to left handed reels, but it just feels off so why mess with it?

I've never really given it much thought.

LH for spinning exclusively. Baitcasters I use both.

Either or, lucky I'm ambidextrous.

I cast with both hands and reel with my right foot. :)

Now that's funny! ;D

Poll is showing about half are LH spinning and RH casting. It's funny, but I always thought everyone fished that way until joining the forum and saw all of the varied approaches. I wonder if it has anything to do with how the reels are prep'd for sale. Seems that I can't recall ever seeing a LH caster or a RH spinning reel on the shelf.... Catalogs also seem to show reels in those orientations. (I'm a righty by teh way, except maybe for hockey)

Im right handed..I cast right handed and reel left handed for both spinning and baitcasting...I like to control the pole with my right hand

I'm left handed. cast both left and retreive both right.  My brother is left handed. cast bait caster left reels right, spinning reel casts right reels left............I don't know!

LH only for both

LH only for both

Me too. I had the chance to cast a chronarch mg today and it casted extremely well but it was in RH retieve and I couldn't work that bait and reel w/ my RH to save my life.

I voted both righty although it feels just as comfortable on a spinning rig with my left. Baitcasting im an exclusive righty.

I voted right handed exclusively because I reel with my right hand ONLY.

I'm a right handed person but I believe I actually use a spinning rod/reel as if I was a lefty. For a spinning reel, I cast left handed and reel right handed.

A buddy of mine was the one got me into fishing and he's left handed. He loaned me a spinning rod of his to use and he had them all set up to reel right handed. I watched him cast so I could learn and he casted left and reeled right, so that's the way I learned to use one. He didn't tell me they could be switched and I didn't know until I had already gotten used to it. When I got my own rod later that summer I still used it the way I had learned from his rods. I remember when I first was casting the rod it felt wrong cause I was using my left hand but I got so used to it that I cannot do it with my right hand at all now.

Now a casting reel, I cast right handed and reel right handed also......yeah I switch hands after the cast.

i checked right hand exclusivley.

the reason for this is because all of my reels are labeled right handed.

the only difference is that on a right handed spinning reel, the handle is on the left whereas a right handed casting reel has the handle on the right.

they are both technically right handed.
