I started using a baitcaster about two years ago and i am decent at it now i started with low profile reels and my best one right now is a pflueger purist but i recently bought a round baitcaster abu garcia 6600bcx i think and i get almost no backlashes with this reel. I still get a backlash every once in a while (more than i think it should) with the purist. Now the question is- are round reels easier to cast without a backlash? or is it something else? are the more expensive ones less likly to backlash? or was it because i was using 50lb powerpro instead of 20lb fireline? any ideas? because it seemed ALOT easier to cast me round reel when compared to my lp, i could even cast my scumfrogs with this heavier setup just as good as or better than my lp.

I don't know why but Round reels do seem much easier to cast.  I have a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier Round reel that I use to crank with.  I can throw anything without having to touch the brakes on it at all.  I have yet to find a low profile that I can do this with.

That actually makes sense.  But I would say after this one breaks down I will be done with round reels unless I get into swimbaiting.  I just like the feel of the low profiles better.

i personally like round reels better. ive got an old diawa millionaire cvx, and its quite small. it works well for both pitching and casting. ive got a couple of lower end lps, but i just dont like the feel of them as much as a round.

I have one round one on a swimbait set up... I prefer the low profile myself...

Has anyone tried Cabela's Prodigy round reel? How about Shimano's Cardiff with 1/4 oz. lures? I tried Abu-Garcia's six bearing round reel, but the spool tension was tied into the magnetic brake, which I didn't care for. Thanks for the responce.

i think its more a personal hand preference. i like lp and round. for what its worth..... hank parker strongly prefers round reels. ;D

I like both, I prefer the narrow spool abu c4 over calcutta's and cardifs. My low pros have a clear advantage over round reels when it comes to cast control. Most round reels with six pin brakes take a lot longer to adjust than low pro's, turning a dial beats taking a sidecover off any day.I love my revo sx, my wife is jealous of them at times, but at the same time my c4 fits perfectly in my hand. If anyone has a prodigy could you post some details about it?

If you ever consider buying a round reel, take a look at the shimano calcutta te series. I just got a 201 te used and let me tell you it is amazing. The retrieve is effortless. The only downside is the weight.

I have only one use for round reels....swimbaits

The main key here is the way you hold your rod?  If you palm the reel a low profile would be the best. If you hold only the rod then go for the round.  Both types do have their good and bad points.  I have both and I palm them.

I learned baitcasting  a few years ago on a round Pflueger. I got a LP later and thought it was sooo much easier to cast. I think it was, but I also think it helped me learn how a baitcaster works. Just this summer I put some 40lb. Power Pro on the Trion and decided to try it froggin'. I ended up with a buzzbait on the thing instead and couldn't believe what happened. I was casting it like a rocket. I tried a crank after that and couldn't do crap with it. Then I tried a frog and it felt great again. It was perfect for those heavier topwater baits. It was like finding a whole new reel. I've been using it for the past month. It didn't take the place of my Patriarch, but it has certainly found its "place" in my line up.
