Best reel and rod for Finesse

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I would like everyone's recommendations for a REEL and ROD for finesse fishing.  I'm not sure what action rod or what type of line or test would be best either.  Keeping the combination under $200 would be preferable.

Thanks,

Davo

Hi Davo,

For your price range, I would suggest a Daiwa Capricorn 2500 spinning reel and a St. Croix 6'6" M Action rod. The Capricorn is very smooth and durable. The St. Croix is extremely sensitive and durable as well. You can pick both of these up and pretty much any Dick's Sporting Goods. The reel is somewher around $50 and the rod is around $100.

There are many combo's out there but I think that is a pretty good setup  and it keeps you in your ballpark of under $200

My finesse setups mostly contain 6 to 8lbs. test. My line of choice is McCoy Mean Green.

Hey, I'm in the same boat you are but these guys on the forums have helped me a lot!  I was looking for the same advice and what I've come up with from all the help here was (thinking you mean spinning gear) is a 6 1/2 to 7' med rod for finesse.  As for reel I'm stuck too. Just posted a topic about it but I was thinking a 2500 Symetre or maybe the new Pflueger President. As for line I don't think you wanna go over 10lb test.  Not sure on your preference on rod's but hit up e-bay and go to SIMMONS SPORTING GOODS page.  Lot of great deals there.  Also look at the carrot stix's on their page listed as 149.99 but make an offer you can get it cheaper trust me I did :)

Define "finesse" and you'll get a better answer.  The rod will be the crucial piece.  Any reliable reel from Daiwa or Shimano will do.  I have a Kistler Drop Shot Special that I use for light DS, small tubes, shaky heads wacky jigs, and split shot or Mojo rigs.  For finesse jigs, bigger tube jigs, and wacky rigs I use a a 7' Team All Star MH/Fast spinning rod.  I've got three Capricorns, two 2500 mand one 1500, and they are decent reels that have held up very well.

I use a Shimano Biomaster 2500 with a Shimano Curcial DS for Dropshot, Hair Jigs and Tubes.
