ABU C4 problem

Recommended Posts

I just took apart and relubed all of my reels. While I was testing them to make sure everything was working ok after i put them back together,  I discovered a problem with my Abu Garcia 4600 C4. when I crank the handle rapidly and stop suddenly as if I was reeling slack and setting the hook, the spool continues to spin and makes a ratcheting sound. My best guess is that the spool is slipping out of the pinion gear. Nothing looks stripped and the reel is less than a year old. I opened the reel up to look at it and looked at the schematic, and everything appears to be put together correctly. What could be causing this problem?

Perhaps a worn pinion or worn spool shaft, at the point two engage.

If it was working properly before you serviced it, I would hazard a guess that the pinion gear yoke is in upside down.

That would be the plastic part that the pinion gear rides in.

Just a guess.

If that were the case, it wouldn't engage at all.  Could also be a simple case of too much grease.  It in fact may not affect the fishability of the reel as well.

That's what I would have guessed also.

thanks for the ideas guys. I checked the pinion yoke and it was in correctly, and my drag and spool tension are set how i would normally have them to go fishing. I noticed that there is some some slight play in the pinion gear. Is this normal or could it be what is causing the problem?

A lot of reels do that, but I don't know what causes it other than normal use. Go to a store that has reels on display and you can probably make that noise with every one of them if you try. If yours is doing it extremely easy, say where it would happen very often with every day use then your problem has become more severe, and you should probably have a reel mechanic check it out, or if you have a warranty see if your problem is covered.

Any lateral play in the spool? If so it could be that the cast control cap is adjusted to lose, and, letting the spool have to much lateral play causing the pinion to come undone with the drive tabes/brake pin. Another problem would be the drive tabes/brake pin (PN#19372) are put in upside down, when the bearing was replaced back into the spool...

Just a thought....

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

I just got off the phone with one of the reel techs at Abu Garcia. The sound I was hearing is normal and due to a safety feature that prevents the gears from being damaged when they are stopped suddenly. I should be getting my reel back within a couple days.
