Baitcaster help!

Recommended Posts

I have been a spinning reel fishermen all my life. I have tried a few different baitcaster's. But I cannot find one I can cast very easy.  Does anyone have any ideas on a good one, that I dont have to throw my arm out of socket to get it to go out very far? Also I would like to stay around $100.00 to $150.00. I was thinking maybe a Abu Garcia Revo-s or a Quantum KVD. Any ideas will help. Thank's.

I tried a friends Quantum Tour Edition PT reel, I think its alittle above your price range, but that reel convinced me to buy a baitcaster this year.  I could throw the heck out of it.  Good distance, great control, just an easy reel to use.

citicas a very good reel

so is the new pro qualifier from trying it out at BPS and from what I heard. and also it won the field and streams best value award.

and the 08 quantum energy pt, normally $189 can be bought for $100 at d*ick's sporting goods

I would also suggest the Citica E from my own experience but I have heard good things about the BPS Pro Qualifier. I think either of those would be good to start with. I tried to learn on a cheap reel before I got my first decent baitcaster and I firmly believe that if you cross the $100 mark for your first reel you will learn much faster than with a cheaper reel. The better quality and components you get when you pay a little more will help a lot when you a first getting used to baitcasting.

Albany,

Any of the combos offered by the likes of BPS and Cabelas will suffice with practice but with out practice none will work well even those costing several hundred dollars.

Look at Reelmechanics tutorial on baitcasting.

If you don't want to spend a lot the Abu Garcia Silver Max is a phenomenal reel for the price. Also, you have to consider the rod and bait you will be chucking. Putting a $200 reel on a $20 rod and then trying to cast a crappie jig will end in frustration ;)  I suggest a medium action rod and start by casting a Strike King Red Eye shad.  I can cast a Red Eye shad 5 miles into the wind with no backlash  :D

Last years Quantum Energy's can be found on eBay for around $100 and they are not bad reels at all.  Pflueger Patriarchs can be found on eBay for around $150 and with the UBS you can fine tune the brakes to fit your personal casting abilities.
