A "reel" dilemma? (UPDATE!)

Recommended Posts

So what's a guy to do when he find himself with two, yes count them two, lonely rods?

I've currently got two empty rods that I need LP casting reels for. Here's the dilemma! Due to finances I'm limited to $100 to fix this problem.

1- Do I buy $100 reel and pull double duty(even though I hate swapping reels off and on and never do it) using it on both rods.

or

2- Do I buy two $50 dollar reels that will get me buy for a couple years.

2a - Are there any $50 reels that are decent enough to last a couple years?

I was looking at the Abu Garcia Black Max as it is $49.99 and I'm a big Abu fan.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

I had the same dilemma and fixed it in the fleamarket on here.  I ended up getting a BPS Extreme and a Quantum PT Accurist for $45 shipped to my door.  I've used both and they are like new reels and I saved a ton of money doing it this way!  Just be patient and something will pop up on here.

The only luxury a poor man can afford is to purchase simply the best with his money, I would not purchase two 50 dollars reels, I would purchase one 100 dollars reel ---> Shimano Cruxis or Daiwa Black Widow ( check TW ).

Plus, you get free shipping if you order from them.

I have an older Browning Citori just sitting here that I will let you have.  I bought a bunch of reels lately and I know I will never really use this again.

It is missing a button so the plate on the non crank side moves freely but it is still fully operational.

If you do that, you still have the 100 bucks to spend on a decent reel.

Let me know.

BT, I'll take you up on that offer!  Not sure what I'll cost to ship it to Iowa but I can ship you some tackle in return to make up for the cost.

If this works for you, let me know. We can PM the details.

Now just one more reel to go!

BTW, this site is great and so are all of it's members

:D

I would buy a Shimano Citica off Ebay for $100 to your door. 8-) Can't beat this reel at this price point.

Speaking of sales from tackle warehouse the black widow II is on sale.

watch the flea market here, or do an ebay search.  the last one I did resulted in last years Quantum PT reel for 129 shipped brand new, Quantum Accurist CX'x 2 for 99, and the Accurist PT for around 65.  This is a good time to buy last year's models at deep discounts, you may end up with a 200 dollar reel for 100 bucks. Good luck.

Well I've got my two new reels! Just wanted to let you all know what I ended up with!

Thanks to Big Tom I've got a new to me, Browning Citori in 6.3:1 for one of my empty rods. Here's a pic of the reel!

That then allowed me to spend a little more money on the second reel. I decided I wanted a burner so the search started. I'm kind of odd and I for some reason just don't like it when star drags are plastic so finding a burner under $100 with a metal star drag it not that easy to do. But here is what I got.

I found the new Quantum Burst 7.0:1 normally $70 for $60. I literally just got this reel 30 mins ago and it is a nice little unit. It is really small which will work out great on my jig/plastics rod and it's pretty darn smooth, not to mention pretty! Hopefully it will prove itself mechanically in a few weeks when I hit the water!

Here's a pic of the Burst!

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I'll post up pics of the first fish with each of the new reels!

The burst should be a good reel, it's based on the code design and I really like my code...not the best but not the worst either.

Just FYI...  BPS is having a 1 day sale on 3/14 that is last year's Accurist PT for $50.  It was $130 last year.  That is a reel that's noticably better for less money.

Wish I had a BPS closer than 4 hours from me. Might replace a few other round reels. Oh well!  I'm happy with what I have and I've only spent $60. ;D
