DUMBEST MODIFICATION YOU MADE TO A LURE

Featured Replies

Hey Fellas; Whats the dumbest modificationyou ever made to a lure, only to render it useless?

I got the bright idea to to try and take the lip completly off a rapala to see if it would look more like a wounded minnow. What I got was a spinning piece of silver wood that just winded up twisting my line. :-/

You know, I am one of the biggest bait tweakers I know.

I mostly do it with the big baits though. I do something to every swimbait I throw. Ranging from the slight and mundane to the extreme.

I do something to one of the Hudds that takes me about an hour and a half to complete. With other similar softbaits, I will take them brand new, and cut them them from the nose to the belly and put a tungsten weight inside .

Honestly, I don't think that any of the mods that I have tried are dumb. Some might be impractical or eccentric, but they have all had their purpose.

If some of you guys could see what I do to $75-$250 baits, you would crap yoursleves :D

As for the rapala, it wasn't dumb, you just made a nice twitchbait ;)

a floating rapala is a nice twitch bait...lip included  ;D ;)

at the moment, nothing comes to mind.....but i know i must have done something pretty stupid to a lure.

wait i got one...i had a strike king crankbait and the d**n thing wouldnt run straight to save its life. well i tried tuning it so much taht the little eye piece broke off. lol.

sprayed chomper scent on my soft baits a couple years ago- yuck and I now think it is worthless. Cruel and unusual punishment is what that crap is! My dad and fishing partner loves the stuff- I hold my breath when they bust it out!

I took a Carolina chip custom crank bait and decided it didn't have enough wobble.

so I cut the lip off and tried .............and tried to modify the lure to give it more wobble.

I finally got something that resembles a usable lure but please don't tell Chip.  :-[

I added minced garlic to about 10 bags of different soft plastics.  Forgot about it over the winter.  Much mold did grow.

Also tried garlic salt, found that the garlic in garlic salt turns black and smells kind of burned.  Threw those out too.

Now I only trim my soft plastics, and only heat bend some plastic bills to make wake baits.

Hey Mook: The Purist and down are all the crappy part of the line, Truth is the Truth. From the Trion on up they are really great reels. If you tried a 39.00 ABU You would run into the same problems but if you get up to the REVO's well thats a whole other ballpark, its the same with rods I bought a few Premiers from St Croix, the single biggest disapointment from suggestions I took form here. Then I fished an Avid and I finallly realized why everyone was praising St Croix, it depends on where you look at each line. Walmart sells a whole lot of blister packed Shimano spinning reels for around 20 bucks, if I judged the whole line by those, basically I would write them off but the Stardic RW gave me showed me what a fine made reel they were, I just love Floogers so I stick by em

That would be me...

I tried to modify the bill of a Rapala Crankbait on a bench grinder.  I put on the slowest speedn and used a pair of vice grips, with pads to hold it so it would not damage it.  Big mistake....

I was doing fine on oneside then I started on the other, I guess I pressed to hard, the lure came loose and went through the grinder.  It is now permanetly modified and I use it as a casting tool.

I have 6 Shimano Callistos that were 39.99 reg price and LOVE them. nothing fancy, but work great. the purists' were more than 80 bucks (on sale at the time) and both pcratered.

How much do you have to spend to get a decent pflueger.? :'(

And who changed my pflueger , 'preal pdescription into 'crap'?? at least you could have put pcrap.

b

49 bucks for the ECHELON and 29 bucks for TRION in Spinning .

Don't feel bad they always edit my stuff :D

Went through 5 rat-l-traps until I figured out how to make them silent with super-glue.

Had a brand new Rapala that would not run true. Tried everything, nothing worked until I removed the hooks.

It now runs perfectly true.

And then there was the time I repainted I repainted my $30.00 Megabass Pop-max

with sharpies.  :-/

I made a lot of dumb modifacations when i first started bass fishing when i was ten and decided to buy a bassmaster subscription. Since I was self taught i did not know much starting off.

1. i did not have many baits and wanted some of those "senkos" but could not go to the store to buy them. So, i cut the tail off of some 4 inch curl tail worms. Looked like a senko. oops.  :;)

2. I also would sometimes pre rig tube baits or worms and put them back in their scent filled original bag. Well i eventually found out that hooks sitting in watery scent for weeks made them rust, badly.  ;D

3. Another time i took my 10 favorite plastic worms and grubs and put them in a clear, square container with aluminium backing, for quick access. Left the container out on a sunny summer day and befor i knew it i had a crazy colored 10 inch square worm. :D

If some of you guys could see what I do to $75-$250 baits, you would crap yoursleves :D

Yea, that pretty much explains it.  Not only would I not buy a $250 bait, yet alone mod it like this crazy kid.

Deleted  OOPPSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Well he may have a point there then
