What hook sharpener do you use?

Featured Replies

I have a few hooks that I need to sharpen up over the winter months. I'm looking for a couple of recommendations on a good hook sharpener to purchase.

I'd like to get one small enough to fit in my tackle box.

Thanks.

If you have the time I just use a small file I never tried the one on my line stripper

Don't buy the Berkley battery powered hook honer.  Otherwise I would just change the hooks out.

Agreed. It's never done much for me.

I just change my hooks out.  On spinnerbaits...I will use a file.  On jigs...I usually lose them before they need sharpening  :D.

I keep a stone in my tackle bag, it works well for me.

New hooks are cheap and ther is no way i can get any hook as sharp as quaility new hooks.  For the price of the file you are getting ready to buy you could probably buy a season's worth of quality hooks.

Owner, Gamagatsu, Xpoint, Ditachi, etc.

Ain't that the truth!

Many (most?) modern hooks cannot be sharpened without destroying the physical intergrity of the hook.

i agree with all the suggestions...just get new hooks. its cheap, more effective, less time consuming, and they are much sharper than re-sharpened hooks. also, since the factory hooks are treated to be corosion resistant, when you sharpen them that takes the treatment off and sometimes your hooks will rust all up.

but if you MUST sharpen a hook (spinnerbait, jig, etc.) then might i suggest a dremel tool. thats what i use when i do sharpen hooks. take a small, fine pointed griding stone ( ie. aluminum oxide ) and just put the tool on med. high speed (8) and just sharpen the hook into a pyrimid shape...works fast and easy.

I don't sharpen hooks unless it is on a spinnerbaits  most of the time I just replace the bait.

I tried doing this to save money and they started rusting where they were sharpened.  Now I just change the hooks.  Ditto on the jigs,  always loosing them before they get dull.  The sharpener I used was the Rapala battery operated, I wouldn't recommend it.

I think magic marker, i.e. sharpy, on scuffed or sharpened hooks will protect against rust.

Definitely not a 100% on this, something I'm going to try the next time it presents itself.

I too replace hooks whenever possible, but on some baits like the huddleston 12 and 16, at $35 a bait , you can't afford to just replace the bait. I use a small, generic hook FILE. As long as you take your time and do it right, it works perfect. I think mine is that "Danielson" brand that you can get at wally world or wherever. I keep enough back up baits with me that I can just retie on the water, but at home I touch them up with the file. Any bait that can have the hooks swapped out gets owners at the slightest hint of dullness. Its not worth risking a giant fish to crappy, dull hooks!

But if you gotta sharpen, do it manually ( muddy, control yourself ;):D ) and take your time.
