BPS and Prices

Recommended Posts

Advice: If you are planning to go to a retail BPS, look at pricing on the web site before you go on items you wish to purchase. I was there this past Saturday for a reel. In the store they had marked as "ON SALE" regular price $179.99, sale price $149.94. If I hadn't know better, that's what I would have paid but I had checked the reels on the web site and that reel was listed there as On Sale for $129.94. I got it at the lower price and saved $50.00. It pays to research and question.

Tell that to the Mooks in the Harrisburg store, on 2 occasions I came in with a copy of the web page and their price. ONLY AT THIS STORE HAVE I BEEN TOLD TWICE: The Internet BPS is a different entity and we do not match their prices TWICE< WITH WITNESSES!

I go to Cabelas,in Hamburg  and ask , Hey is that on sale at the net; THE SALESMAN looked it up, it was and they matched the price

Reason # 2 I only use Cabelas now

Odd, because the Harrisburg store is where I was... Hummm

Anyway, I go to Cabela's (it's only five minutes awat for me). The biggest thing I don't like there (Hamburg Store) is the lack of organization. Items never seem to be located by a product catagory or make. They also have some thing about constantly moving stuff around so you can't find it. Most of the prices seem on the high side with little or no lower end pricing. That store is also always full of a lot of rude people on weekends!

i have faithfully ordered stuff from BPS since the early 80s but, this year, i have decided to no longer do business with them unless no one else had what i needed.

the stores do not honor the online prices unless you bring in printed proof and ask for a price match.

the stores also will not take back merchandise you ordered online and vice versa.

if you get a gift card, the amount of the gift card is deducted from the qualifying purchase amount of any promotion!

when ordering online, you had better print a copy of your order summary because that is the last time you will see the prices you paid. it has happened to me two separate times where i placed an order using a $20 off a $100 purchase offer and the discount shows up properly and order total is correct, but each time, the charge on my credit card was $20 MORE than my order total. i went back and looked at the order confirmation that was emailed to me...it shows no prices or the order total. i looked at my order history online...no prices or order total. good thing i printed my order summary because that was the only proof i had that they overcharged me. i know it sounds crazy to insinuate a huge company like BPS is shady but there is definitely something wrong here!

their inventory system for their clearance section is not in real time. it is really frustrating to place an order expecting one thing but not finding out until the next day that they didn't actually have it.

i read others here report about the great customer service they get at BPS stores but i have no such experience. i tried to exchange a BPS rod that was only 2-3 months past the one-year warranty because the trigger had cracked but the manager, who said he was bending over backward for me, said i was SOL.

cabelas, on the other hand, totally stands behind everything they sell. they don't penalize you for using gift certificates. they email you order confirmations with prices and order totals on them.

You can hmmmm all you want but that is what happened and it happened twice. Cabelas in Hamburg, moves their floor plan seasonally, and yes it is a pain in the butt. The fellas who work there, seem to always be able to put you onto what you are looking for.

Cabelas and BPS  have about the same prices on brands, other than there own. If I need something cheap I go to Wally World.

BPS; Bait and switch with their combos, They have given a few people ( according to some older threads here) The Internet is different from the retail price dance and their ridiculous shipping and handling fees drove me away for good

Fair is fair: The Cabelas shipping and handling is not any bargain either, but I live so close that I just get it sent to the Hamburg store, and get free shipping and pick up service.

Frank,

I just got a $100 gift card to BPS for Father's Day (Wahoo!) and plan to buy a Pro-Qualifier BC reel when they go on sale. Are you saying I won't get the sale price if I use my gift card? Or am I not reading this correctly?

Thanks,

DMB

I got the same treatment at my local BPS on multiple occasions. Maybe they just don't like us, Muddy.

hey DMB, sorry for the confusion. here's what i'm talking about:

www.basspro.com/save100

this is the current promotion for $20 off a minimum $100 purchase. let's say you want to take advantage of this promotion and so you place an order for $115 in merchandise. if you paid by credit card, you'd get the $20 discount. but, if you want to apply your $100 gift card toward this order, you would have to order another $85 worth of merchandise to get the $20 off because the amount of the gift card is subtracted from the qualifying amount of the promotion, in this case, the minimum $100 purchase. this is why i hate getting gift cards from BPS as gifts...not only can it be worth less than the cash amount it was bought for BUT you don't get the rewards points for them either. cabela's does not do this and the only reason i can think of why BPS does is because they figure they already have your money so why bother.

Most national retailers will match their Internet prices at the store.

I have done this at Best Buy for me and Joann Fabrics for my wife.

Guys in Harrisburg are jerks. i would not go back, either.  ;)

Never had any price match problem with my local BPS.  They will price match anyone as long you bring in a printed copy of the other stores price.

I always compare their on-line prices to the store prices before any purchases, just to make sure I get the best deal I can.

Am not found of their bait and switch tactics though.  Just have to be real careful with what you buy.  It the price looks to good to be true, then it probably is.

Later, ;)

That is an unfortunate business practice. Unless bought at a discount, gift cards should always spend like cash.

I have been to some of the BPS retail stores and have not had the problems you are talking about, but maybe I have not been to them enough to run in to problems.  You do have to check internet prices before shopping at them.  I got a lower price at the store on a reel this spring than on the internet.  It was a model that they had changed this winter and raised the price, the store had the leftover models so I was able to get one for $30 less than the internet.  I would love to have a Cabela's or a BPS with in an hour drive.

I bet I know why they do that.  There's a lot of people in the idustry that get a BPS discount (pros, vendors, outdoor writters, employees of a few different companies, etc)  and they get their discount on gift cards.  I'm sure BPS doesn't want a "double dipping" on discounts, but they should have some sort of way of knowing if a gift card was purchased at a discount or full price.

I know I get a discount at BPS, but it doesn't work with a gift card.  If it did I could buy a gift card at a discount, and then get my discount again when I used it.

Wow they treat us more than fine, Bruce wanted the Dawia Rojo  combo they had on line. They did not have it in stock as a combo, but had him go to the aisle to get the rod, they got the reel and repriced it at the combo price, that is taking care of your customers ! 8-)

the memphis tn store is great about matching online prices. they'll look it up online to verify for you. no need to print anything off. guess it has alot to do with what kind of employees you deal with.

the bps by me will also price match off of bps online for you, even give you online sale prices, ive had a few guys there give me items for cheaper and when i asked why they said cause its on sale online.but i do think that bps rips you off online with their outrageous shipping fees.thats why i prefer TW for online stuff,or dealers on here.

I've never had a problem with price matching at bps, it might take a few minutes but they always come through. The Springfield store will match cabelas, and TW on all reels. I have friends who are vendors for bps, cabellas, wal mart, so I rarely pay retail for anything other than hooks and weights. I hope the poster enjoys his new JM signature reel.

The Store in Katy, Tx WILL let you take things back that you order online. I took back an Extreme and traded it for another, and I had a buddy take back his carrot stick that he did not even buy there and got a new one.

Just a suggestion from my personal experience: strike up a conversation with one or two of the sales associates each time you are in. I shop the Cabelas store in Wheeling and have become very familiar with two different clerks there. Both have helped me save money several times now. I am a bargain shopper and rarely spend more than 100.00 to 150.00 bucks, most times 50.00 or less. Both of these guys are very friendly, very helpful, and ask me if I need something every time they see me. They have sent to the bargain cave on two occasions that they sent back "new" never been used rods that had never been sold/and returned. They both clued me into the internet price match. I purchased a two tourney trail rods at christmas two years ago, and then they had their xml rods on sale. One clerk told me to bring them back and exchange them for the xml rods. When I came into the store, he saw me, went to the customer service clerks and told them he had already spoken with me and to just let me exchange the rods, then went back with me to find the two rods I wanted.  I now have two "friends" to help me. Best part of all, both are great guys and have shared many fishing tips with me. We shoot the bull for several minutes each time I am there. Maybe it's because I am such a likeable guy ;D, but I can only commend these two guys on the service they provide me.

I've gone into the Harrisburg BPS with a copy of a web page at least three times that I can remember and each time they matched the price. I've always had great experiences with the Harrisburg BPS.

I'm siding with Muddy on this one on the Harrisburg store. I'll go there for the Get-together like we did back in the spring but overall, IMO,  that store sucks. Can't stand the lay out, my Brother and I both have had associates there tell us that they don't have anything remotely close to what we were talking about (and they were BPS brand baits). I've gone to the store in Baltimore with internet deals and they've matched them every time. I think that even if the Harrisburg store was closer than the Baltimore store, I'd still go to the Baltimore store!  :)  I'm not a fan of the BPS On-line store, if I need to order something on-line, I'll use TW!  ;)

Witness number one since he spoke up. I was trying to buy an extreme reel that day and it was on sale on the net site for 20 dollars less than the store price. Speedbead, Basser 89 and Sharkbite were with me and neiter the salesman or manager would meet the Internet BPS price, AT HARRISBURG

The other instance was for them to match a price on a BPS site sale for a Fritts Cranking reel, Ron was with me that day   SAME DEAL!!!!!!!!!! No Going  So now MUDDY IS GONE :;)

Which is not gonna break them by a mile

Yeah, I remember that well. That was pretty messed up! Another thing that popped in my head was the "wonderful" rod selection they had while the Spring Classic was going on. There was BPS rods and BPS rods, and BPS rods, did I mention BPS rods. None of which was what I was looking for.   ;)
