Shallow Crankbaits

Featured Replies

Hey I own a Luckycraft Fat Shallow Cb, I tryed throwing it a few times but with no success. Can you guys tell me how/when you use these? How do you fish them, do you let it float to the top and twitch it as if it was a topwater? Do you fish them with a steady retreive? Or do you fish them with jerk jerk pauses, like a jerkbait. Also when do you use this lure, spring? fall? I never had a fish even peck at a shallow crankbait, don't know what im doing wrong :-/ and Luckycrafts are too expensive to be sitting around collecting dust. Here is a link to the crankbait im talking about http://www.***.com/descpageHDCLUCKY-LCFMSR.html#.

Fish it around outcropping trees and use a steady retrieve with it. You cant be afraid to lose it fish around heavy cover. Crankbaits are good all year. Shallows are good in summer

its square bill will climb right over timber and not get hung up very often

I just think your problem is that you are not throwing it were the bass are. Timber is a great place to throw a shallow crank as stated above. If you are just throwing it in open water you won't catch anything.

Anime is right.  Throw to the wood in the water.

Throw to the shore and reel back along the cover.

Change positions and throw to go across the cover.

Throw, throw and throw.

Mann's Minus One is an excellent shallow running crankbait. The Bandit 100s are also good.

Don't be afraid of getting hung up.  You will get hung up so why worry.

Crankbaits with the square bills will flip over the structure and not get hung up as much as the other crankbaits so look for the ones with the square lip.

You can also fish the Mann's Minus One over grass but be ready to get grass on the hooks.

Have fun.

Look for cover and structure. A steady retrieve is usually effective if there are bass in the area you are fishing. Bass strike for several reasons: 1. to feed; 2. to protect their territory; 3. as a reflex reaction; and 4. just because they are curious!

In shallow water the absolute depth of the lure is not important. In fact, a deep-diving lure that digs up the bottom is often an excellent choice. In deeper water, it is important to fish at the depth the fish are holding or sometimes above them. Finding fish in deep water may be a bit more challenging, but remember it's still about structure and cover which provides protection, ambush sites and attracts baitfish to feed upon.

Don't give up on these yet.  I have had great success with the Moonsaults and the Fat CB's.  I have the best luck with them when I fish parallel to the bank casting over cover.

A good, inexpensive shallow crank is the Bomber Square A.   I, too, fish them near structure -  blowdowns, stumps, cypress trees.  They are great baits and you won't cry of you loose one.

Hmm, alright thanks guys, you gave me some more hope in this lure. I'll try it again probably in the spring. So throw to cover with a steady retrieve. You don't give it any jerks? Just a steady retreive like as if it were a spinnerbait?
