I've asked this question on the tackle tour forums but I want to get all of your expert opinion on the matter as well

I recently received as a present the St Croix Legend Tournament Bass 5'10 skipping stick with a line weight of 8-12 lbs.  I like the feel of my CI4 1000 with a 6lb test on it.  Is it a cardinal sin to go under the line weight for the rod? What are the drawbacks to doing so?

Not a sin. Say 5 Hail Mary's and leave a large sum of money in the collection tray.

Simple solution:

Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb breaking strength).

Going under a rating is not a problem...  but if you use line and lures that fall very much under, casting may suffer a little.  That's about the only real effect you might see.  Of course if you went way far under, you might break line on a hookset but you are fine being #2 under.

I have wondered about this too.  I understand using line above the rating runs the risk of breaking the rod, but don't see the need to have any minimum.  

I'm not even remotely sure about this but I would guess............that the max line rating would also have something to do with the lineguide sizes too, meaning that heavy line would hinder the cast length due to smaller lineguides used and too much friction from non free flowing line.

I would also imagine that the minimum line size suggestion is to prevent loss of a quality fish from the rod being too stiff for the lesser line and snapping it off on the hookset, just as flechero said.
