Curious, how does it work down south???

Featured Replies

Up here where we have both open and hard water fishing, buying tackle is somewhat defined. Sept-Oct the hard water tackle starts filling the once full, now mostly empty, summer fishing shelves and pegboard. Come Feb, the switch over to open water fishing begins. What's it like down south?? Do they allow inventory to shrink some after Christmas, so there is room for the "new" products coming out, or do they just "make room" for the new products until the older products are thined out more??

Well since the season here lasts year long, I have not noticed any shrinkdown or surplus during different seasons. But yeah they kind of just start moving new products into the older ones places when thay are all gone.

I fish worms and flukes 95% of the time so it's not hard finding a hook, a sinker and a worm.  The stores I shop at carry enough of the hot products to last all season/year and I don't really notice a change.  Now saltwater live bait is a different story.

I can tell it's crappie season down here by looking at the shelves.  Never noticed it for bass baits.

Well you are asking a personal question but as we are all friends the answer is...

yes, there is definite shrinkage when it's cold  8-)

Well, here in the Mid South we have different fishing seasons. Right now is PRIMETIME for smallmouth bass and sauger. In another month, brown trout spawn and a few weeks later it's crappie season, BIGTIME!

Green bass are caught all year, but the best time is March through October. Same goes for striper and catfish. White bass are year around, but best in late May and June. Big bream in the late spring.

So, fishing equipment sales is a year around business, the emphasis just changes.

It pretty much remains the same stock plus some new additions.

Here in Virginia the stores get stocked in December and January and by July there are empty shelves and pegs for popular baits, hooks, weights, etc.  You may have trouble finding some baits from mid summer on.  Then next January the shelves get restocked and new baits are brought out.

It looks like it reads that the deep south is near constant, and up by the M/D line, there is more of a seasonal flare to the fishing stores. That's interesting.
