new frog rod suggestions

Featured Replies

Hello all. I'm looking for a new frog rod. Ideally, I would like the price point to be around 200. My current lineup is mostly avids. This one doesn't have to be an avid but I am looking for a quality rod. Thanks.

I don't do much frog fishing but I like Powell Max rods.....plus it's got a little froggy on it  ;D PCFR.JPG

I am going to try out the new Loomis TWFR854 once Spring comes around. I want something mainly for buzzfrogs around light cover. Seems like  good rod with all the backbone I need. The powell would be great too, but I am not a fan of split grips. Thought about a Dobyns 735, but it would look odd in my lineup.

Aaron, I know a guy who lives kinda near where you keep your boat who has a Powell frog rod. Let me know if you wanna set something up so you can meet up and go handle it.

the Powell looks very promising. can you set up the "deal"???

I'll see what I can do! His username on here is Slip Gun. I'll shoot him a PM in case he doesn't see this.

I really want to check out Dobyns rods. I want a t-rig/light jig rod but I'm seriously expecting to get one of their rods once I get the dough. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Light, powerful and able to zing those frogs a country mile and still control them. The Zillion TDZL741XHFB would be my choice. It's their swimbait rod, but i use the Steez version as my frog stick. Paired with a Zillion 7.1 reel and 65 lb Sufix braid.  The rod retails for $240 so it is a little more than you want to spend, but I'm pretty sure you wont find a lighter rod for what you want it to do.

I use a Dobyns 736 for frogs. Absolutely love it. The 735 is good too, but I fish a lot of heavy stuff and like the added power to horse them out. Perfect length, and very well balanced. If you get the 735, you can also use it for jigs, t-rigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, just about anything. The 736 is a good jig rod as well. They're all extremely light.

Good luck.

I can't speak on the previously mentioned rods, but, I just got the Powell frog rod and so far, am very impressed. Got it spooled with 50lb braid on a Curado E5, it slings a country mile. Sensitive tip with plenty of backbone.

I got mine from ***.

Should definitely match it with a HIGH SPEED reel, STX 7.1, Curado E7, Zillion 7.1, etc...
