Swimbait setups?

Featured Replies

What's your setup for throwing swimbaits (ie Mattlures Hard Bass) up to about 4 oz.?

I want to stay in the $100 range for the rod and reel ($100 reel, $100 rod).

What else are you wanting to throw? I went with the Okuma 7'6" Heavy because I'm not going to throw anything over 5oz and strapped a Shimano Cardiff 300A on it. For the money this is the best swimbait set up you'll get.

That's exactly what I was looking at! Hahaha but basically the same setup as you, and for throwing Mattlures Hard Gills, etc. What kind of line do you use?

should be a good setup....for line I use 20lb CXX

Agree with both above.  I have the 7'6" H Okuma w/ a 301 Cardiff or 301 Curado D (great deal purchased around $100)

What I am throwing for the day will typically determine what reel I use.

Like Rick, I also like the 20lb CXX for most of my applications.  Larger baits (4oz and over) I will typically switch to Triple Fish Camoescent 25lb and a 401 Cardiff.

Mine is a 7'6" Calcutta mhf rod, Chronarch 101 reel. Never throw anything over 2 ozs..

One thing you guys might consider re: line is, Diawa Samuri braid, with a short (5' or less) fluro leader. The Samuri 55 # is really Limp, makes for Loooonnngg cast's. I use 12# 100% fluro for my 5' leader..

Rods:

Lamiglas XC807 Big Bait Special.

3/4- 3 1/2 oz.

I also have that Okuma.

Reels: shimano curado 300

and a shimano calcutta 400B

I didn't read the original post, I thought it was just for suggestions.

Mine is a 7'11''MH Dobyns Mike Long Swimbait Rod, Revo Toro 50-HS, 20lb CXX.

This is my set up:

Gblanks 7'11" XH/F

Curado 300E7

BPS 20lb flouro

I agree with the Cardiff 300 since you're trying to stay around $100. I had one for a long time and it's a great  reel for the price.

I just bought the Damiki Dark Angel 8' Swimbait rod for my big stuff.. it's rated at 2-10 oz but we will see how true it is out on the water... I am going to match it with my Banax LX108 WP or i might buy the JDM  version of the cardiff , the Axis

I already have the banax and am not sure if the axis is worth a 100 more than the cardiff

So for everyone who couldn't read the original post, he's trying to keep it to $100 each for a rod and reel.

Haha thank you. I mean (just to clear it up) $100 for a reel, then a $100 rod. $200 combo ;)

yeah I somehow missed that. The Okuma rods are around 100 and they are pretty nice. and a cardif 300 would pair up nicely. If you look around long enough you might be able to score a nice used calcutta for under $100.

For a new set up, I think Nick got about as close as possible..

Also, what about used rigs..? A friend just scored a G Loomis rod 3-5 oz..and a Calcutta reel for 180.00.

my set up cost me 185000 won or 156.03$  ah... to be in the land of OEMS lol

Yeah Hard Gill is next on my list but right now I have spooled berkley big game 20lb and it's worked just fine but ordered some triple fish camo-escent because I've only heard good stuff about this line and it's fairly cheap...I just haven't been able to use it yet because of the weather.

I found my cardiff 300 for only 70 so look around you should be able to get both of these for less than 100 and then you'll have enough for a swimbait afterwards! ;)
