Most of my spools hold around 100 yards of line. I like to change the line often during the season.

Is there any way to put less line on the spool because at least the first 50 yards is wasted. Putting on cheaper line first and tieing a knot is kind of a pain to do. Does anyone have a way of putting something else on the spool to take up space, tape etc.?

You don't have to buy and add a "cheaper" line as a backing. Just don't remove all the line you use now and add new line on top of that. Learn to tie the uni-uni knot for the connection.

I do what Wayne just said. I take off the first 30 yds or so and tie on new line. The uni knot never broke on me.

I always add a backing. Even with line that isn't that expensive like Y/Z Hybrid.

It just doesn't make sense to add an entire spool of it when I'm only going to use at max, 50 yards or so...

Especially useful to make a spool of Flouro last longer.

I use kite string as filler, then load about 120yrds on. After that I change the top 80 to 100 as needed.

I use a single Uni to put line over string. I use a blood knot to connect fishing lines.

I use 25 lb Berkley Trilene Big Game.

The fatter the backing, the quicker the job gets done.

Just leave enough space on the spool to bury the uni-to-uni connection.

I use what ever cheap line I have for backing line (get a few spools when on sale at walmart for a couple bucks for any new reels I get) then use a blood not to attach about 50 yds of my main line.
