Crossed over to the dark side ...Shimano core 100mgfv

Recommended Posts

Never thought I would buy a shimano baitcaster but that's why you never say never. I love my Daiwas but they dont make anything nice with a flippin switch like the core has. I needed a good reel for flippin and pitchin and no one else was bidding on this reel. Thought bout gettin a Castaic but everyone says they arent comfy to use all day not to mention they are a bit heavy. I couldnt pass it up for 256 bux brand new. Anyone else use the 100MgFv ? Now I just need another loomis glx rod to pair it up with, any suggestions ?

How heavy cover are we talking?  How about the BCFR 894 GLX... it's a very versatile and powerful flipping stick!

Steve, you are in trouble. I am a Daiwa Guy and I had few Curados, which were nice, but soon were replaced with either a Fuego, Sol, or Zillion. Then I got a great deal on a Shimano Core 100MgFV. After it arrived, I was blown away. That reel is AWESOME. I ended up buying 4 more 100MgFV and another Core 50Mg. This reel is the finest reel there is (besides of course the Steez). I think you will be happy.

Here is what I paired my Core 100MgFV's with:

- G Loomis GLX BCFR954 - Flipping and Punching Heavy Mats

- G Loomis GLX BCR875 - Carolina Rigs

- G Loomis GLX BCR854 - Weighted Plastics

- G Loomis Msybck BCFR894 - Hollow Bodied Frogs

I was thinkin more along the lines of the BCFR863 GLX but I havent ever handled one. I'm not sure if thats gonna be enough rod for me. I have noticed my glx rods seem to have somewhat light tips compared to other rods I have rated similar.  I really want something no longer then maybe 7'3 to pair it up with. I'll be throwing alot of sweet beavers and creature baits with this setup. Not so much punchin mats tho, I have a powell 766 for that already and might pair it up with a daiwa millionaire i'ze light 103.

Simply put........ that reel is amazing. I have one sitting on a cumara 6'8 MH extra fast and it is a killer combo. You need to put that reel on a shimano rod. It was built for a shimano. Sounds like a good oportunity to put one on a new cumulus!!! I will be upgrading two of my curodos to core 50's this year.

Couldn't agree more! I have the same exact setup except my cumara is fast action instead of extra fast. Love the reel though. You won't be dissapointed!

Ha Ha. Start saving your money. Soon all you Diawa reels will be cast aside for Core's. I made the same mistake last year. They are addicting. You can not just have one

The shimano cumulus rod sounds like a good idea perhaps. Altho I wanna handle one first before I start day dreamin bout it. For what those are gonna cost I cant see how they would be a better choice then the tried and true loomis glx rods. We'll see bout that tho.

What line do you guys recommend using on the Core 100MgFv for flippin and pitching?  Braid or Flouro?  What size?

You're going to pair a Powell 766 with a Millionaire IZE Light for punching mats?  :)  That is a light line finesse reel...  you would be better off putting the Core on the 766 and find yourself a nice lighter action casting rod to take advantage of what that little reel can do.

Wow ... $256 for the Core100MgFV??  Where you get a deal like that, please do share!  ;D

I have two of them and like it very much.  The power handle, the 7:1 gear ratio and the light weight works great on my Steez flipping stick!!  But ... I am a fan of the Shimano reels.  Though I did buy a couple of Steez reels, I think the Core reels fishes better, IMHO!  :)

Daiwa is the "dark side."  Shimano is the "pink side."

see that's what I wanted to know. I dont know alot bout that reel other then the fact its a round reel that weighs 7 ounces, and of course what I read on TT's review. Guess Im gonna need another one of these cores, one for punchin mats and one for pitchin/flippin plastics and jigs. What is the best application for the i'ze light anyways ? Where would it fit in?

I use mine on a light/ultra light action Megabass rod for tossing little bitty crankbaits, very small jerkbaits, tiny torpedos and poppers. The Ize Light is an amazing finesse reel capable of tossing very light stuff paired with the right rod and the right line. The rod will make a HUGE difference in what it can do. Feel free to PM anytime :)

Oh yeah, on a technical note, Daiwa really is considered the "Dark Side"  ;D

Uhhhh, no, I don 't think so, you won 't take my Daiwas unless you take my TDZs, Alphas & Pixies from my cold dead hands.

"buy a couple of Steez reels, I think the Core reels fishes better"

What ????

In that case you should trade me 1 of your Steez reels for the core 50 mg I have posted in the flea market.  I'd hate for you to use something you don't like.

:)
