When would you use a medium action rod? I got one from my step dad as a gift, baitcaster combo, but it seems to light to get a good hook set, haven't tried it yet though. Any thoughts?

Man, too light for a good hookset depends a lot on what line you are using and how sharp the hooks on your baits are, if the hooks are quality made and razor sharp you can get a good hookset on a Ramen noodle for rod if you know how to set the hook and/or rig a bait properly with a lesser powered rod.

You don 't need use brute force for setting the hook.

When I use a medium power rod ? well I pretty much use it for everything except when the cover type and density asks for something with more muscle to get it out of cover.

I like using a medium action for my weightless plastics like senkos and flukes.

My favorite rod is 7' medium power, extra fast action. I use it for T-rigged plastics and jigs to 1/2 oz unless there is heavy cover that requires heavier line and more power.

I like a med rod for lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits, but I generally use braid so I can use a softer rod and still get a good hookset.

Would depend on the brand too, not all rods are rated the same imho..

I have two medium baitcasting rods, a 6'6"M Pro Qualifier and a 7'M Zillion.  The PQ gets pushed aside nowadays but used to use it for just about everything aside from jigs, the Zillion is my tube/shakey head rod.  A M rod is good for cranks, light t-rigs, tubes, topwater, etc...

i imagine that your talking about a medium powered rod , right ? ! if so it also depends on the action (fast , extra fast , moderate ,etc..) cause if it had a moderate action it would be perfect for crankbaits (small -medium diving baits )

I have 2 St. Croix medium powered rods at 1/4-5/8. One I use for t-rigs and the other I use for shallow crankbaits.

I have a medium powered daiwa that's 1/4-3/4 that I use to use for jigs, now it'll probably be my topwater.

I have a med/heavy powered Dobyns that is rated 1/4-3/4 that I use for jerkbaits/spinnerbaits/lipless cranks.

Any treble hook baits besides a 10+ft divinf crank!!

I have a medium action St. Croix Avid and I use it for all plastics and jigs that aren't getting thrown in heavy cover, and it works great 

i have a 6'6" which makes it perfect for topwater, jerkbaits and lipless cranks, i also use it for some soft plastics, jigs undr 1/2 ounce, and small spinnerbaits/crankbaits.

Shallow to medium cranks, lipless cranks, hard jerkbaits, Pop R's, Torpedos, just about any treble hook lures except maybe deep diving cranks.
