Why the difference between spinning and baitcasting reel handles?

Recommended Posts

I've been a life-long spinning fisherman.  But recently I've run across some awesome deals on a couple baitcasting setups and have decided to give it a try.  But I'm having trouble getting used to the shorter handles on the baitcaster reel.  So I'm wondering, why the difference?  And does anybody know if someone makes longer single-ended handles similar to those on spinning reels that I can retorfit my baitcaster with?

Thanks,

Dave

Fortunately, that is not the case and there are casting rods out there with longer handles.

At times, that extra long handle can get in the way of pitching or flipping if you have a gut like me.  ;D Joking aside, if you have a cabelas close by, take a look at the Mag Touch line of rods. The casting models IMHO have unusually long handles and I can tell you this because I have one. I have the

Cabelas Mag Touch

Power: Medium

Action: Fast

Type: Casting

Length: 7'

Model #:MGTC70

Pieces: 2

Lure Weight Range:1/4 - 1 oz

Line Weight: 8 17 lb.

Color: Black

Guides: Alconite

I have noticed it drops to about half of its regular price twice a year. It is a mighty fine rod at $99 and sweeter at $49.99.

I have caught many nice bass and some hefty pink salmon with it.

I think he means the handles on the reel.

You can find longer reels, but its really something you'll have to get used to.

LOL Now that's funny!

Dave, sorry that we kind of messed up your thread, but as JF said, it is something that you will eventually get accustomed to.

i don't know about spinning handles . my Revo inshore has a longer than most  baitcasters. i am changing out the stock handle on my revo SX with the longer handle from a Revo Skeet Reese model bait caster (same length as the Revo inshore) i don't like the short stock length handles on baitcasters either , so you might try looking into the revo Inshore baitcaster  http://www.***.com/Abu_Garcia_REVO_Inshore_Casting_Reel/descpage-AGRI.html

BPS sells replacement handles for BC reels. I think the longest one they advertise is 4-1/2".

The BPS "power handle" isn't a bad handle, it fits most reels.  I had one on my Sol because at first I didn't like the short handle but you really get used to it.

As this is my first season with a baitcaster (over 30 years fishing), I also noticed how odd the shorter handle on my STX felt. I just wonder how it will feel when I nail my first 5lb + fish on the new rig.

i used that handle on my Revo SX but then took it off cause it would work it self loose , not really the handle nut , but the handle it self was getting rounded out where the crankshaft goes thru it , didn't actually fit good like a stock handle did , plus the handle flexes way too much . i took it off and am gonna replace it with the skeet reese handle , already got all the parts , gonna have Mike from Delaware valley Tackle , our site sponsor , put it on after he does some upgrades to the reel  :)
