I know this is a stupid question, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to open up the sideplate on my new revo.  Can someone explain to me how to do it?

There should be a screw right next to the Abu Garcia logo on the crank side. Unscrew it and the palm plate should come off.

That is exactly what I did, the side plate isn't even budging though

those Revos are known to be a pain to get the sideplate to rotate up. youll have to put some effort in the job.

Unscrew the aforementioned screw, grasp the side plate and twist in a counter clockwise direction.

The first time may be a little tough, but that's all there is to it.

Still nothing.  Ive got the new skeet reese w/the mag brakes, should the sideplate still open up? I don't know whether it has dual brakes or not?

Sometimes you have to losen the Cast Control Cap. Leaving it adjusted puts pressure on the spool shaft at that end of the reel and presses the side plate against the screw that holds the plate in place and locks it...

Before opening any reel's side plate just back off the CCC and Drag Star, and Mags (if any)..
