Hooks for tubes?

Featured Replies

i like the tube heads which are jigheads that fit into the tube but there is an exposed hook   if u need to fish weedless a 4/0 Wide gap with a screw in weight or pegged weight rigged trig does the trick   the size of the weight depends on the amount of vegation or whatever

In relatively open water, an inserted jig head is the traditional rig. However, I prefer either an inserted tube weight rigged with a 4/0 EWG Offset worm hook, weedless or a traditional T-rig, unpegged and with a bead, weedless.

With these rigs the action is SIGNIFICANTLY different. With a jig head or inserted weight, the tube will swirl as it sinks. When bass are aggressive, this is generally the best action. Most of the time I fish the tube with a variation of the "dead stick" presentation. This involves long pauses and subtle movement (like a crawdad moving over a rock). This is my best technique in deep water during the summer.

Depends on the size of the tube. Owner wide gap's and rig'n hooks are good. Gammy EWG's are good. Anyhook with a wide gap will work. I use from 1/0 up to 5/0. I want the hook to penetrate the bait about 1/8" ahead of the tails.

I put the weight inside. For small diameter tubes, a split shot works well. For larger tubes I like a bass casting sinker, with the hook run through the eye of the weight. I almost always shove a couple of crappie nibbles in ahead of the weight. I like the nibbles with glitter in clear water. 1/16oz of weight is usually just about right.

Anybody know why they call those weights "bass casting sinkers"? You never see anybody casting for bass with them.

The majority of my tube fishing is on lakes filled with hydrilla so I favor a t-rigged tube. I use either Bass Pro's Magnum flippin tube or Mizmo's Big Boy tubes. These are a bulky 4" tube so I use a 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook.
