Need help with choosing line.

Featured Replies

It seems like I am always second guessing myself on line and I need help because I always end up with braid. Currently I am fishing with Dawia Samauri Braid in 30lb (6lb mono equiv) and 55lb test (10lb mono equiv). I am sure that using this braid, or braid in general is not doing some of my lures and justice and is probably making wary fish not bite.

I mainly fish worms, both weighted and non weighted, crankbaits, buzz baits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, jigs, and also flip and pitch.

I have 1 spinning reel that is an Abu Garcia Soron SX10 and the rest are Abu Garcia Revo-S baitcasters.

My spinning rod has 30lb test Dawia Braid and so does my baitcaster that I use for crankbaits. The rest of my baitcasters (5) have the Dawia Braid in 55lb test.

How would you set up your reels? For example:

(BC) Crankbait reel -

(BC) Spinnerbait / Buzz bait reel -

Spinning reel for worm and weightless -

(BC) Pitchin and Flippin reel -

(BC) Jerkbait reel -

(BC) Jig reel -

(BC) Spare / utility reel -

I like to use specific reels for specific techniques that are paired up with rods for that specific technique.

What pound test would you use, and what type of line would you use (mono, copolymer, or braid) with the above techniques?

Please let me know if there are any other details you may need. Thanks for your help.

here's my suggestions okay:

crankbait: 10 or 12lb mono(go heavier if you are in heavy cover)

spinnerbait: monofilament if you want the spinnerbait to stay near the surface(use flourocarbon if you want to feel everything that your lure hits)

buzzbait: monofilament or braid but not flourocarbon because it sinks

worms and weightless lures: 6 or 8lb flourocarbon

pitching & flipping reel: Depends on the type of cover, but I use only braid or flourocarbon.  If your in heavy cover go with braid, but in clear water I use flourocarbon only or braid with a flourocarbon leader.

jigs: same setup as pitching and flipping because jigs are made to be thrown into the heaviest of cover

spare reel: put some copolymer line on this reel

hope this helps you

I took RW's advice and added the 12# Ultra Soft to my Daiwa Exceler Baitcaster to pair with my Cabelas Prodigy 7' MH/MF rod.

My recommendations are P-line CX, CXX, or Yo-Zuri Hybrid.

Spinning 8-10lb

Cranks and jerkbaits 10-12lb

Spinnerbaits and plastics 12-

Jigs 15-20lbs

Berkley BigGame monofilament on everything, and they currently are running a rebate.

I use 10 and 12lb, 15 is a little stiff. 8lb on spinning rigs for the lighter stuff.
