Looking to pick up a few rods need advise avid or loomis

Featured Replies

Hey guys i currently have one casting rod, its a St. Croix Triumph series 7' med/fast, with a Revo SX. I'm looking to get a crankbait rod (and for general treble hook use) and a nice worm rod.

Im looking at the Avid AVC70MM possibly or the G.Loomis CBR853C GLX, Is it worth spending the extra money on the Loomis?

Now for the worm rod...I've been fishing a lot of T-rigged senko's, fat ikas, and other rubber worms. I heard that you want a med/heavy power rod for making a good hookset, but not sure if a Med/Hvy power rod will throw these lighter baits. I was looking at a AVC70MHF the other day and it seems very stiff.

If i went the Loomis route for my worm rod which would you recommend? I'm not sure i understand the difference in the jig&worm series and the senko series.

Thanks guys

I would recommend the Avid 70MM for your crankbait rod. Seems like a big jump from a Triumph to a GLX. The Avid gets great  reviews too. If you really want a GLX then I would spend it on the worm rod. There are several rods that would fit your need and everyone will have a preference. An "all around" rod that will do what you want as well as others is an MBR843. A BCR803 or 853 makes a great T rig rod. Not sure on the exact difference between the two series, but others will probably chime in and help. Another popular rod is the senko series BCR893.

You should just use the Triumph for cranks. Cranking doesn't require a sensitive rod.

Then I would get the BCR853 or BCR854 for worms. You'll probably be fine with the 853. Loomis tends to be a bit under-rated.

If you don't want to spend that much on a GLX, look at the Avid AVC70MHF.

I would also recommend PM'ing roadwarrior, he knows a great deal about both series.

another rod id look at is the Compre CPC-C70MB Crankbait Cast Rod 7' Medium. its a good lower end rod.

Well, I have some of these rods. For most medium weight

crankbaits, AVC70MM is everything you want. Later you might

consider the Avid AVC66MF. This rod has a soft tip and is ideal

for working topwater and jerkbaits.

Your worm rod can also be your jig rod. I have a BCR854 and

MBR844C which are very similar, but I lean towards the MBR

without the recoil guides. Although I don't own one, everyone

says the BCR893 is the ultimate Senko rod. It will be my next

purchase!

*NOTE:  If this is still available...BUY IT!

i'd get an avid crankbait rod and save some cash for your bottom bait rod where sensitivity is more important. id look at the loomis bcr803 glx for a worm/jig rod or the mbr783 glx for a more "all around" rod.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Ok im going with the avid AVC70MM for my crankbait rod.

Been checking out both the BCR893 and the BCR803. I read the review of the BCR803 and it sounds like a great rod. Is there any other differences between the two besides one is 7' 5'' and the other 6' 8''? This is really going to be a dedicated worm rod so maybe the 893 is what i want? If you all have any other input before i click buy I would greatly appreciate it.

The St. Croix MHF are *very* stiff; equal to others HF.  I wouldn't recommend it for senkos but for heavier bottom lures/spinnerbaits (.5oz+).  That Legend Elite is a great deal and I would get it for your worm/jig rod.

I have the Avid 70MM, 70MF and 70MHF.  I have used the 70MM extensively for senkos and weightless plastics and have had no problems with hooksets.  It helps that I'm a braid guy and I've fished plastics with even noodlier rods.  However I think the 70MF is the ideal all around rod - you can fish senkos and any other plastics, and it makes a great large/deep crankbait rod (cranks that would overpower the 70MM).

Personally I'd go cheaper than the 70MM for cranks - get a Triumph or other decent rod.  Then with the money you save, use that for the Legend Elite that RW linked.

I have an Avid AVC66MF that I use for top water, jerkbaits, shalow crankbaits, and weightless finess worms.  This is the first St. Croix that I own and it will not be my last.

i have not fished any of the other of the BCR  casting rods rods but ive heard people mention that the 803 has a different feel than the longer 3 power bcr rods. might be something worth looking into.

Bronzefly?

i just saw roadwarrior's post about the new NRX series Loomis rods...maybe wait and get a NRX893JWR, whats an extra 100 bucks when your already spending 350-400

I would try and get your hands on both an Avid 70MM and 70MHM before you buy one. The MM is very whippy and in my opinion only good for real small cranks. I sold mine and bought the MHM which I think is a way better all around cranking rod. I toss everything from Baby -1's to DT16's with that rod.

I bought a avid 7ft medium spinning rod recently, and I can't see the logic in spending 3 to 400.00 on a glx! If I had the money I still would get another avid or even go with the g-loomis mossy back or bronzeback, I have a 6ft8inch mossy spinning and I use it for worming too, I just like a spinning rod for my worming, it's your choice! This is a technique specific rod. Examples of the perfect lures

for this rod are XCalibur Xr50, Norman Fat Boy, DT6 and Jitterbug.

It's too "whippy" for jerkbaits and top water lures that you walk,

but that's not what you would buy it for.
