Hula Grub/Spider Grub Recommendations

Featured Replies

I like fishing 5" hula grubs for smallies on a football head.  What are some good brands that I should look into.  I've tried the BPS and GYCB ones with good results.  Any suggestions on other good skirted grubs?  I would like to buy some in >10pack if possible....like 25 or 50 pack.

Thanks

i always think of buying them but never do how do u fish them and how do u rig them? and do they work?

Throw em on a football jighead as your trailer. Then drag them or hop them. Deadly in rocky areas.

Weightless, skirt forward, on heavy hook buzzed through pads...pausing in holes to let it do it's thing

I just started  making my own double tails, have not tried um yet,, kind of cold here in Michigan.. :'(

I hope  they will be awsome.. very similar to Yami's..

I prefer "Chompers" skirted double tail grubs, atleast before I made my own..

texas rig weedles w/ 1/16 or 1/8 bullet

Chompers makes good Hula Grubs. But your gonna need to some gloves cuz dannggg they stink.

I agree. I won't buy them again because they stink too much.

Chompers is the only other one I have had success with.  The GYCB hula grub in black with blue flake and a 1/4oz Tru Tungsten Weed Wacke is still my favorite.

Hula/spider grubs are also great flipping/pitching baits.  Texas rigged with a 3/8 oz weight

the "Stink" you are smelling from Chompers is

there G-Formula scent.. "Garlic" Thats part of the reason they work

so good. Plus if you have that on your hands you will not give off Human scent on your other baits..

:P

This bait has caugh me tons of bass. It's the Berkey Sabertail Grub. Love the action of this bait, the way it's tail flutters as it moves along the bottom. It deserves a spot in anyones tackle box.

In moving water on the Tennessee River and fishing deep structure on both Pickwick and Bull Shoals, I have had VERY good luck with the GYCB Single Tail Hula Grub. In relatively open water, a jig head rig works well, but for the most part I fish it T-rigged, weedless with a 1/8 oz barrel weight.

In shallow water (<12') the GYCB Fat Ika, weightless and weedless, will usually outperform the Hula Grub. The action is significantly different.

I experimented with the Ika a little bit last year.  Like it a lot....fished it like a senko on a 4/0 ewg.  I also had a lot of bites river fishing, throwing it upstream, and letting it tumble down....looks just like smallie food!

I don't think anyone has mentioned pitching them on a 1/4oz Arkie head with a weed guard. :-X

The first time I used it I caught a bass on the sabertail.  No idea why I stopped using it after that? I'm definitely going to focus on using it again this spring.
