Would this setup cause me to cast short?

Featured Replies

I have a Quantum Accurist PT, Shakespeare Ugly Stik Casting rod 6'6" Medium and trilene big game 12lb mono. I tried casting a arbogast hula popper the other day and it went maybe 8 or 9 yards, woohoo. The string is newly spooled, the spool tension knob is mint and i only had four brakes on (minimum before freespool). No backlash at all, just short casting. I havent used it in years, is that normal? Practicing in my yard i can cast wayyyyyyy farther. Haha, first cast was hilarious, but after that i got back into the swing of things.

If the reel casts differently fishing than it did in the yard, I would suggest adjusting the spool tension knob for the lure you want to cast and check the guides to be sure you don't have a tangle or maybe have threaded through a guide brace by accident (it happens).

Could it possibly be the hooks causing drag? I used a broken hula popper (lip damage) without hooks, so maybe it flew more streamlined?

Any resistance from hooks would be negligible.  I dont understand what you meant by saying the spool tension was mint.  Does the bait fall when the button is pressed without any help, if not, back off the spool tension.  IIRC, 4 isn't a step up from free spool, 2 would be, maybe your brake is too high.

maybe oil your spool bearings and chech your brakes and spool tension

Chris,

I would suggest that when we get the Hot Sauce to you, you deep clean those spool bearings. Acetone will get the old Hot Sauce out of them (a couple of good soaks), then one drop of the new HS into each bearing as needed..

I know how to set the spool tension knob. By mint I meant that it wasn't too tight or loose. I will most certainly relube the bearings, does lighter fluid work as good as acetone?

Personally I wouldn't use either on Hybrid PT bearings.

But with that said.... 8-)

Both are/can be hazardous to your health even in small amounts.

Use them wisely in a WELL ventilated area.

In my shop I use Safety Kleen degreaser (none carcinogenic) which is filtered, I also use gloves and a mask for the deep cleaning.

So no matter what you use be as safe as possible..

Keep both away from flame!
