Sol for deep cranking...

Featured Replies

...anybody use one for those purposes?  Thinking about putting one on a 7'11" MHX crankbait rod I just built.  Gonna use 10lb CX.  I plan on throwing DD22's, SK series 6X, Fat Free Shads, Mann's 20+, etc.  with it.

Sounds like a good plan. You might want to use a 90mm or even a 100mm handle to increase leverage/ lessen fatigue (stock is 80mm)

x2. I think the gearing of the Sol would handle deep cranking just fine, but I would certainly want to upgrade to a 90mm handle and I don't think 100mm would be overkill at all.

I don't think it would be an ideal deep cranking reel.  IMO, the Sol doesn't have the spool capacity, or the power to be a really good deep cranking reel.  I've used them and caught bass in heavy weeds and retrieving them on a Sol can be pretty laborious.  Cranking deep, heavy cranks is going to get tiring after awhile.  The Sol excels at casting light baits - shaky heads, small cranks and topwaters.  It is out of its element casting DD22s.

youd probably find a Zillion for the same $$$, and have a more suited reel for the job.

I already have the Sol, and have a Winch, but just wanted to see if I could get by with something lighter.  The Sol gets 23.5" per turn and the Winch gets 21", would the longer handle on the Sol make a difference?

As for capacity 100 yards of 10, and if I got lucky and cast half of that, wouldn't the reduced spool diameter also slow the retrieve down?

Or does the Sol just not have the guts to handle the application?  I don't feel like it's weak in any repsect, but just looking to lose some weight.

The Sol's got the "Beef" to do deep cranking. Internally it's similar to all other Daiwa's. Brass gears, good drag, bearings, etc

Give it a try. You got nothing to loose

Like Russ said, the Sol is well built.  It has a bronze drive gear and bronze worn gear.  It's got a good drag.  My issue is that is has a very light free floating spool and the intent of the reel isn't heavy cranking.  It's a finesse reel and a reel for light baits.

Will the Daiwa Sol do deep cranking duties?  Yes.

Will a Honda Sol pull your bass boat?  Yes.

But that's not its intent.

i might add the first year i owned my first Sol it saw nothing but DT-10 cranks, the next year i had to replace the ARB. might not mean a thing but........

I've been using a Sol on a 7'10''M Carrot Stix Gold to throw Strike King Series 5 & 6 baits for the past few outings.  My only problem is I just about spool the thing on every cast.  I've had no trouble handling fish on it.

A longer handle is a must. With that said, I think the Sol could handle deep cranks, but I found it handled shallow cranks to 12'ft the best. If you want a dedicated DD22's and the like I would look into the Zillion crazy cranker or Curado E5.

That is just what I needed to hear.  Great analogy.  Looks like I'll stick with the Winch.  Thanks
