Dicks sporting goods.

Featured Replies

So-so.  If the store used to be a Galyans & changed to a Dick's Sporting Goods, they for some reason carry a better variety of fishing stuff/equipment.

They carry a few things that BassProShops doesn't.  Such as Roboworms+a Yamamoto bait....fat Ikas+Daiwa Peanut.  At least in my area.  I wish one of these stores would start carrying more swim baits.

I freakin loved Galyans!!  I've gone to Dicks many many times just to find out that they dont have what I wanted, I would say it is more a beginner fishermans store because they have quite a bit of stuff but I have to go to Gander Mountain to get specific stuff that I want.

They have a nice selection of lures, however, compared to BPS and cabelas they have a poor rod/reel selection.

Great place to buy certain baits.  They're always running a sale.

Depends on the store and what you're looking for. They have lots of run of the mill lures, but they don't carry more specific stuff. They also have good deals quite often. They often don't carry very many reels and the rod selection is typically terrible. They best rods my DSG has are some lower end All Stars and sometimes St. Croix, other than that it's mostly junk.

great place to get some decent baits and terminal tackle.....until they run out. Then good luck, they wont restock. So if you see something you like buy all of them.

They're all a little differnet, too.  The one by my house has a lot of bass and big fish tackle.  The one that is in the area where I work is slim on bass tackle but has more fly fishing stuff than any other Dick's I'd ever been to.

Like many have said it depends on the area...In Northern VA, there's one Dick's that sells Loomis IMX and GLX rods, St croix and All star rods with a ton of other rod types to choose from...In Richmond (southern VA) the 2 Dick's that I go to have low end st croix and All star rods, they do sell alot of plastics but skimp on hard baits.

i get some stuff from there that other places don't have. and they have a lot of stuff on sale at the one by me, so it has some of the good things about it. just not as much selection as i would like

Dicks is ok in my opinion. Like everyone else pretty much mentioned they have a good variety of softbaits and hardbaits etc, but they don't have specific baits in which you'd find at bps, and other big outdoor stores. So if your not too picky on what your looking for bait wise, then its a pretty good place. Mine carries a good amount of powerbait baits, Zoom, GYCB (senko/fat ika/baby craw only), yum, and shaw grigsby baits, as for hardbaits they have a decent amount of rapalas, storms, daiwa, very few lucky crafts, cb bombers, rebels, heddons, arbogast, booyah, strike king, terminator, roboworms, slug-os and probably a few more things that I forgot about.

But I one thing I higly recommend is like bass_fin@tic said, they take EXTREMELY long to restock, im talking months upon months. So if you see something you like, don't buy a few thinking you can come back if you need more, cause if there gone you might as well just come back next christmas, buy them all or buy as many as you think you'll need, trust me and fin@tic on this.

I made the mistake of asking for gift cards to Dicks as presents from relatives for Christmas, mainly because I wanted to buy myself a Shimano Stradic. Well im still waiting on them to get it in stock, they only have the extremely small sizes. (They said they'll have it in stock by mid March, but im sure thats gonna be a load of crap.) So yeah, if you like what you see, buy in quantity!

Oh yeah one more thing, in my opinion I wouldn't shop there for rods, as their selection is pretty crappy, I personally think your better off going to a small tackle shop or a local big outdoors store when it comes to rods.

There is a reason that they take "forever" to stock....IF ever.  I was a backwall manager at a Dick's (fishing/camping/watersports) for awhile and finally quit out of frustration.  Dick's works with a group of corporate "buyers".  These people travel to the trade shows and are given a specific amount of $$$ to work with.  Lets say that they see a lure or piece of tackle they like.  They might spend X amount of bucks to buy X number of lures.  Once they blow their shopping budget for the year....that's it.  They get the initial shipment of lures/tackle they purchased and distribute them among the stores.  Once they're gone, there's no purchasing bucks left to restock.  Dick's stores can swap merchandise between stores if need be, but as for just picking up the phone and ordering more of what they just ran out of.......Nope.

The Dicks in my area has very limited fishing supplies.

The DSG by me is great! The rod selection like others have said is a bit weak. But there always fully stocked up and are always bringing in some new things. Funny that we were just talking about Reaction Innovations yesterday on the forum. Last night I went to Dicks and they are now carrying there product. They have a good selection of Zoom, Yamamoto, Roboworms, Berkley, Yum, etc.

Like others have said.....it is going to vary by store because some of the posts that people have written are not even close to being the truth in my store. Hope this helps a bit.

It sucks imho.

We have Academy Sports accross the street, and their fishing dept is twice the size.

Dicks has horrible rod /reel selection and limited tackle. One step above Walmart.

See what I mean ha ha ha. Everyones stores are a bit different.

So Andrew....just go to your nearest Dicks and check out there selection. See for yourself if they meet your needs.

It's a great store when you first start out but get old quickly. The store closest to me have alot of saltwater stuff. If you are going to go, go now, when they are getting all of the new spring stuff in. After that it's not worth it.

I will say that I did buy an Avid on sale for $99 at Dicks' last year.

If you shop the sales, occasionally you will find a deal.

I still say that they do not have much of a fishing dept compared to other stores in my area.

I have three Dicks Sporting Goods within 15 miles of my house.  They all carry a different assortment or lures.   Two of them have a much larger and better selection than one of them.  One even carries  LC's.  All 3 of them Rod selection is pretty weak.  Like others have said, they are defiently worth stopping by and checking out, because they always have something on sale or clearance.  Last week it was 20% of Zoom and Rapalas.  It looks as if they are about to restock everything, so i have been finding really good deals on stuff lately.

last season some one would post a some great online coupons for DSG in this forum. I hope they can find and post them again this season. i really cleaned up with those.

I really like the dicks that I go to. Plenty of fishing stuff and always has what I want it stock.

Dicks is okay as someone said earlier it's about a step above wal-mart.

Pretty much all I look at is the sale items.

Andrew,

I don't think so.

They have a very limited selection, at best, and their prices are not that great.

I would rather order on-line or via a catalog than going to a Dick's store.

But the ones in my neck of the woods is pretty good. The wal marts are pretty junky, but if you know what to get you might find it. I've even found stuff at target thet was worth buying bait wise.
