I'm a bass fishing newbie.. help me find a beginner lake/pond in the Twin Cities area.

Featured Replies

I just began about a month ago.  This past weekend my friend and I decided to try out the Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Dakota County, Minnesota, specifically Holland, Schulz, and McDonough Lake.  Holland supposedly has largemouth, but we just couldn't get any to bite at 7:30am.  The water is deep and my friend was using jig, frogs, worms, and nothing.  Schulz and McDonough were jokes, as we didn't find anything in them, not even sunnies near the shore, so we figured it was a dead lake.

So anyway, are there good places around the Twin Cities I should be hitting?  My brother say to go to Calhoun and Minnetonka so I'll have to try those out, but any other worthy lakes?  Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard!

do you have a boat? if so just about any lake will provide bass, when I pick a lake i look for small, usually people dont fish it and the jet skiers and water skiers will leave it alone, usually ;)

where are you located, what town?

If you can go during the week and early in the AM, Turtle Lake has an excellent population of Largemouth.  Lake gets a lot of recreational use though, so you have to go early and on a weekday.

This depends on if you have a boat.  There are a ton of good bass lakes in the west metro area in the Eden Prairie, Chanhassen, Minnetonka area.  The problem with a lot of these lakes is that they are in suburban neighborhoods and they are surrounded by houses which makes bank fishing rather difficult unless you ask permission to fish from peoples yards/docks.

I am very familiar with the south west side of the metro area, if you want some specific tips for that area of the Twin Cities, PM me.  But like I said, I am not as sure about bank fishing.  There you would probably be better off in the city lakes like Calhoun etc.

Hey all!  Thanks for all the replies!  I unfortunately do not have a boat, but my brother does have a canoe which I can probably take out.  I'm located in the NW Metro in Brooklyn Center.  I'll have to look up some lakes in the SW area.  Thanks!
