For Us KC Area Guys - Fishing Reports

Featured Replies

Hey guys new to the forum..........the smallie bite at Coffey County is still pretty good.  Had 28 yesterday from roughly 7:30-11:30am, with one fish going 4lbs.

I have moved back to the area recently and have heard Melvern is the best smallie lake in the area, is it better than Coffey County?

Here are some pictures and the video from the giant I caught at LaCygne this weekend. She weighed 10 ls 15 oz and released to fight another day.

Fished LaCygne Sunday- I started up lake and noticed quite a few boats in the river section. I pitched flooded brush and water willows for a while ending up with one fish about 2lbs.

I'd much rather fish Melvern but a lot of guys like Coffey. Fish average bigger at Coffey but get bigger at Melvern.

I am thinking about fishing the creek out at La cygne with my pond hopper. Someone want to talk me out of it? lol I have done well out there before but it was in November and I have a feeling water temp my be really high right now. Any other suggestions? It's my lady day of summer andi am hoping to luck into a biggen.

I used to fish the creek out of my 2 man during the summer and do really well with a green pumpkin/purple flake flipping tube or a firetiger 100 series Bandit. Had a great day on a chartreuse blue back Baby -1 too.

That said, if the wind isn't bad you could easily do Cedar Valley in a 2 man and it's produced big fish for everyone that's been there recently.

The white bass were fun! Don't know how many smallies came unbuttoned, but it was ALOT. Sure was windy though. Clayton, thanks for the report. Definitely helped our trip down there to be an enjoyable one.

They have White Bass in Melvern??? Sizzle and I went on a slay-em mission last year!

Last week was so good that Coty and I went back this past Thursday. Numbers weren't quite as good but I had 3 over 18" and there were a couple big fish that should have made it to the boat. 2 of my keepers were on a Bull Shad, other was on a tube. Tube, spook, and squarebill did most of the damage, video to come once it's uploaded. I also had a nice sauger and Coty got a keeper eye on a tube that took the ride home with us :) We were slamming some BIG drum too.

Are there electric hookups at Cedar Valley?

So in love with Melvern!

Creative use of the phone holster there Clayton. Can't let my wife see that or she'll expect me to start answering calls on the water.

Hehe, ask what happens on a good hookset... Lol

According to what I found online there is. I know I've seen RV's camping out there before and you don't normally see those unless there's electricity.

Mine calls me at least a couple times every day plus everyone wanting the play by play fishing report for wherever I'm at so that was my best solution. I tried holding it while I was fishing once, now there's an Iphone in an Otterbox case in the bottom of Miami State Lake.

Good looking fish guys. We smacked the drum as well!

That was actually the ONLY one we caught all day. Pretty surprising but I'm not complaining in the least. I know Conor was though, it was a heartbreaker. Never seen a Drum hit a spinnerbait before, lol.

One particular point produced 3 I think. Never seen so many drum fly  :laugh5:

Nice fish, nice day! When you say you were using a tube, I'm confused. Were you walking it weightless on topwater? I haven't fished plastic tubes before (if that's even what you're calling a "tube"). When do you use them as opposed to say a football jig or a t-rigged senko?

3.5" KVD Coffee tube fished on an 1/8 oz. tube jig, just slowly dragging it along the bottom.

No real need for a football jig, we were fishing anywhere from 2-8 feet of water. Can't say I've ever fished a Senko t-rigged for Smallies. Closest to that I guess would be the Ned.

KVD Bitsy tube was crushing them as well.

Thanks for the info. I guess I got caught up on you saying the topwater bite was good all day. I haven't fished smallmouth much. My ignorance coming through.

KVD Sexy Dawg was the walking bait of choice for topwater. You can see in the video that most times I couldn't even get 1-2 twitches in before they exploded on it.

They were really smashing it, I noticed. Looked like miniature killer whales on Planet Earth or something. Jealous. Nice video.
