Swiss Bass

Featured Replies

T-rig,

The pics you've shown of Swiss Bass are some of the healthiest and nicest looking fish as far as color and everything. I would imagine part of it would be the really clean cold water. Do they just have a lot to feed on or what :-?...

Your right, T-rig is the only guy on the forum from Europe. It is a really treat for us to see all those cool fish from Sweden that he catches. As you seen from the pics, he catches Northern strain largemouth bass, which are the older, smarter strain of largemouth. Also Sweden's waters being so crystal clear, the bass vision is at its best. Which makes it more of a challenge to catch. 8-)

You guys have some nice fish there. What are the rate of fish you get there being under 30cm

  • Super User

30cm is about average. There are some fish around 60cm but that's as big as they get.

post-7272-13016293183_thumb.jpg

But on a fishing trip would you get 1 fish over 30cm and loads of fish under 30cm. With us, we can go out and get 200 fish all under 30cm and only 5 fish just under 1kg. But then you have days where you just get fish over 30cm but way under 1 kg or you can have days where you can get some nice fish. All depends on where you fish. As our coastal dams produce better fish than inland waters

I am just interested as it seems your waters are managed pretty well as our problems in our dams are that there are too many small fish and not enough food for the bigger fish as the small ones get the food first

There aren't that many bass around in the lake fish. Right now in winter they are very difficult to catch. In summer you can catch alot fish around 20cm but that's no fun. ;) The bass are very well fed, there alot of shad and crayfish in the lake. Bass are not stocked (invasive species). I consider a good bass 1,5kg up. My PB is 3.58kg.

As far as I know it is the biggest bass ever caught here. These are northern strain bass. You guys have florida strain right?

Unfortunately alot of small bass are taken by locals.

How's the fishing?

Over here the winters get cold as well. Defiantly not as cold as over in your valley. But the fishing in winter do produce some nice fish. Our dams are also full of fish of around that size and do become a problem when fishing a comp and you need 5 fish over 30cm. Bass are also not stocked in our dams as our government also sees it as an intruders. A good fish for me is 2kg up as we have loads of fish between 1kg and 2kg. I was fortunate to weigh in at least 2 fish over 1 kg in our club competitions and one over 3kg's. My PB is 4.1kg's and the current South African record is 6.29kg's. We have Northern strain in most of our dams and some dams have Florida strain. We have the same problem with our carp fisher man. They remove loads of fish during the spawn and even if you try and educate them they just get hard assed

How's the fishing?

The situation in Cyprus at the moment is dramatic. We had no rain yet in January and the dams' level remain low. I do not know how this will end up but we pray for rain in February otherwise it will be a complete disaster ;) ;). For the moment we do fish trout. We have a good population of rainbow and brown trout in some small dams up to the mountains. Dams were stocked two year ago for the first time in Cyprus with brown trout. This fish is new for us but it is without any doubt a chalenge.

I hope you get some rain soon, things can change quickly. Texas was experiencing a severe drought that lasted several years, but the rains returned last year with a vengence. All of their reservoirs filled to capacity in 2007.
