a new maryland state record has been caught!!! it is the new tidal record, but it is in a different category than the freshwater record, which still remains the same since 1993. it is howerver the largest bass ever certified in maryland! read about it!

I definitely would like to go up to BPS and take a look at. I have a $50 gift card there so I guess I should go pick up a few things while I look at her too

When I was in maryland I knew about this. At the boat show the guys from Fish on club were there and that guy was one of their buddies. That is awesome, we were all talking about it being the state record. That sure was quick to get it set in stone.

That is one big fish.

What a hog. I'm just glad it isn't out of a pond.  The last MD record accordingto the DNRfishing in MD book you get with your state license was out of a farm pond.  Something about that just screams "miracle grow".

I used them for ice fishing and for saugeye and walleye fishing, but never bass.  They do work for those three things, and I guess they work for bass too.

I find it odd that he caught it on a BPS lure and took the bass to BPS to show off. I don't know... I may be wrong but something seems fishy.

i dont see anything wrong with him taking the fish to bps even though he used a bps lure. i think taking it to bps was the right thing, and the bps lure was a big coincidence.

if i caught a true hawg, what i would do is donate it to my bps. that way you can go visit it and see it alive and well, instead of dead on your wall. and then when it dies, maybe the bps would be able to give it to you to have it taxidermied (<--probably not a word).

i think that is a rediculous lure he caught it on. lol. i would have never used one of those lures. but hey, goes to show even the most simple, plain lures can catch true hawgs.

It was tidal, I am not sure if it gets warm water or not. The guys in the Fish on club in maryland said they pull out hawgs this time of year.

Justin was fishing Blue Plains near the Spoils. There are beasts in the spot of the river.

I too hear that people catch giants on the potomac this time of year. A guide told me that he caught his two biggest potomac bass in the month of february

That's pretty awesome the way that happened.

That style of lure is very popular in the Northeast especially for cold water bass (SM and LMB).  I believe the original is the Silver Buddy, but there are many brands out there.

Crestliner, a member here, uses those types of lures all the time in fall/winter for smallies and has tons of luck.

If you aren't fishing a Silver Buddy (or similar lure) this time of year in the Potomac River then you aren't catching fish. The Spoils is an amazing cove that gets warm water from the Blue Plains facility flowing in it all winter long. It is definitely a year-round fishery. Awesome catch.  I am a FOBA (Fish On Bass Club) member and we have winter tournaments in that area often.

I believe I have one of those lures but could never find out how to fish it, do you jig or swim it in?

Kozak - you just cast it out & let it hit the bottom. Barely twitch it off the bottom - you stop when you feel the vibration of the lure. Let it settle back down. Then twitch it off again...after a long pause, maybe 15 - 30 seconds. They usually hit it on the twitch, probably after watching it dead stick for awhile. Don't be concerned about the brand name - use any of them or mold your own. I'd recomment braid and a stiff rod. Smallies prefer gold....LM go for the silver. But a lot has to do with the water you are fishing. Hope this helps.

Soon ill be catching the state record im pretty sure my pond i fish since i was 9 yrs old has a 13 or 14 pounder and i did catch a 10- 4 back in 86 in the same pond and i have seen a bigger one since last yr matter of fact
