I live in the southern Maine and fish from Sanford to Machias to Waterville. Take trecks to Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts for tournaments.

Where you are there must be 20 to 30 lakes to fish for bass and other species. I live in Portland around just as many lakes, most of which are accessible by canoe/kayak.

It is hard not to see how serious you take bass fishing, but you might want to consider fishing with an organization that was brought to Maine in 2007, called USA Bassin. I help run it. We are the fastest growing and will have five events just around you. We are not a hard core group at all, but a 100% amateur organization that fish tournaments for fun.

Go to my posting called "USA Bassin New England 2009" to learn more.

Hi all, I'm new.

You are not alone Drewster116. I'm from Washington county and pretty much fish in Washington and Franklin counties. Love both largemouth and smallmouth fishing. I fish in tournaments put on by The Maine Blade Runners, good group of fisherman.

One thing we have in Washington are lakes that don't get much use. My home lake, sorry a secret, 9 times out of 10 I have it all to myself and it has both largies and smallies. There is only about 12 camps on the lake.

Whats up guys!

I'm from the portland area and fish often around sebago lake. I have a question for you guys, What is your go to bait? I have been reading a lot on here lately, and the techniques others use do not work for me particularly in the colder waters. I just wanted to get your opinions. Thanks!

Most of the places I fish get hit pretty hard. I try to fish soft plastics that no one else is fishing. I love soft plastics and use the newest creature baits I can find. I catch fish on spinner baits also and am still tying to figure out crankbaits. I find it amazing that when I fish with a good friend who is great with crankbaits I will fish the same thing but always go back to what I have confidence in which is soft plastics. I have to force myself to change baits , old habits die hard.

You have a couple of good fishermen in your own back yard on Indian Island. Look up Chris Francis or Wane Loring, they can help you out.

Mainebassman,

I used to live in Washington County in Woodland. I thought the fishing there was second to none until I moved up to the Bangor area and WOW!!! Even in this area the fish are un-pressured with very few boats on the lakes and ponds. I don't think bass fishing has totally caught on in MAINE yet... :D

Bass-1

Do those lakes around Bangor have a mixed bag of Largies and smallies? Have you fished Pushaw yet? I have heard good things about it and one of these season I'm going to try fishing it.

I totally agree with you in that the State is just starting to catch on to bass fishing. I wish they would do more to protect our bass fisheries, I think they are still stuck on the cold water species. I would love to see catch and release only on my home lake. Kind of wish people would get away from the thought that the largemouth are going to hurt the smallmouth. My favorite lake, (Lake X), has had largemouth in it for only 20 years, and they co-exist with the smallies no problems at all. The fishing has only got better and I'm still catching nice smallies.

Maine bassman,

most all waters up my way are combo waters. Pushaw used to be a real good water for big smallies, but since 3 years ago when someone put Pike in it, the fishing hasn't been the great. imo. As far as bass being protected in Maine, they have better protection then trout, salmon and togue. Check out the regs on them, you can only keep 1 bass from April 1st until July 1st, that is just so funny, I love it.... ;D ;D
