I think you'll do good staying shallow. I think you'll see bass on bed and some leaving bed, and some still waiting to go on bed. Caught some decent keepers sunday, in 8 ft of water.

I fished Kentucky lake all day Monday and Tuesday. I fished mostly around the birdsong and new johnsonville area. I had one good fish out of the two days that weighed about 6. I caught it in a foot and a half of water on a jig flippin in the pads that are coming up. There are a lot of little fish shallow but I couldnt find any other big ones. Catching most of the fish on a jig shakey head and a spinner bait.

I have been fishing a little further south, on Pickwick,

but I suspect things are very similar. The good news

is big numbers.

Location: 4-8' water off gravel banks

Lures: Lipless crankbaits, Bandit 200,

small Wiggle Warts, jerkbaits, buzzbaits,

Keitech Swim Impact 4.8" Fat swimbait

and shaky head.

Last Saturday on Pickwick

On the Forum I have stated that "everything

works in the spring, pick your favorite lures".

Saturday I pre-rigged 10 rods, four on deck,

six stored. I fished most lures for 30 minutes,

whether I caught fish or not.

Starting with a small Wiggle Wart, snagged

three "keepers" before changing rods. The only

lures that didn't produce were jigs and spinnerbaits.

I attribute the jig failure to fishing too fast, my

partner was scootin' down the bank and that's

just not my deal with a jig.

The guides I talked with said it's too early for

topwater and spinnerbaits, but I went with them

anyhow. The Cavitron produced several strikes

and 1 small bass. Nothing on 2 different spinnerbaits.

Best structure was gravel bars, shallow. However,

this trip was all about numbers so we didn't fish much in

deeper water.

Overall, mostly green fish and one brown.  The

big bass was +/- 4 lbs, our five best were around

13 lbs or so. We caught bass throughout the day.

If I were fishing to win, I would have stayed with

medium depth crankbaits all day:  Wiggle Wart,

Rapala Shad Rap, XCalibur Xr50, Bandit 200, LC

Rick Clunn 3.5 and Bagley BII. "Moving" baits

seemed to be key. However, soft plastics were

effective.

My big fish was caught on a Rage Tail Lizard,

C-rigged on rip rap in about 8' of water. Found

one more before moving to the next presentation.

This was another rig I could have probably fished

all day.

I think we will be on a topwater bite by May1.

8-)

I had a few fish that I caught on a buzzbait but they were all small fish. Seems like the big females are still out deep except for the one 6 pounder i caught. she was full of eggs but other than that i couldnt buy a big bite. Those fish on kentucky lake confused me I couldnt figure out if they had spawned out or not. This sure has been a weird spring so far.

went to ky and barkley 21-23, on ky, numbers were great, caught 50 myself one day but no big ones. my buddies caught some nice one on barkley. the other boat with us caught 20-30 smallies on barkley, very rare, 3 of them over 3lbs. and lost a bigger one. with all the rain this week, i would say buck brush might hold several, but i have always caught fish on gravel/chunk rock banks on ky lake. spawn should be soon, if haven't already started.

Will also be there the first weekend in May.

Were you down towards Paris?

blood river and east bank of main lake. didn't even make a cast on west side so am not sure on that side. gooogle ky lake fishing report, first two sights have the major guides reports, and look at lake conditions. watch the wind on ky, can get rough.

yeh we had some 4 footers last year. Got wet a few times. What was your water temp last week

Won a boat in tourney last week catching post spawners with jigs in 4 to 6 ft water with willows.  Lake is trashed now though from the rain

congrats, not a bad prize! would like to make the trip to see the lake, but as of now it is suposed to rain on my next four off :) wonder what this will do to the ledges, shell beds, grass, etc.
