Is it better to use a regular hook for worms and such and only use a wide gap hook when necessary or do people just use wide gap hooks for all applications?

I use a worm hook when texas, and carolina rigging. I use a wide gap when rigging up a top water frog, fluke or jerkbait.

For me it depends on what I am about to throw.

Trik sticks and brush babies EWG for a 7 in Ripple Tail, Manns Jelly worm or a Zoom Trik: Regular worm hooks. You also can use diffent mil thickness of these hooks to control the drop rate of the bait!

Those are EXACTLY what I was thinking about.  I was looking at them last night and trying to decide if a wide gap was necessary or not and then wondered if there was a reason NOT to use a wide gap in all applications.

I started using Gamakatsu's EWG hooks exclusively last year and my hook up ratio became much better.  It could be that I was fishing a little bit more and just got better setting the hook, but I have a lot of confidence the EWG hooks.  I use them for almost all applications now, whether right or wrong.

im a guy that uses wide gap 99% of the time....

i always use either gamagatsu, or my personal favorite- Lunker City's Texposer hooks

I dont like hooks that bend the worm or bait, or make them spin the water because they are off to a side...I like the hooks that line up perfectly straight (hard to explain)

i always set my hooks to be perfectly symetrical, and they work great...

anybody know what the different reasons you would go with the first kind?

If you are fishing in scummy water, narrow barreled bait,tear worms less, the profile and fall rate is different.

i use wide gap hooks exclusively. i have never had a problem with setting the hook. i think with wide gap hooks give you have a better chance of keeping the fish on the hook if you make a mistake while reeling. it also gives you a better hook up ratio (think about it the wide gap gives the plactic more room to go when setting the hook). hopefully this helps.

I use 4/0 EWG for most of my soft plastics, but I use to use the Round Bend (1st picture above). For big diameter worms or a 7" Senko, I still use a heavy gauge 5/0 Round Bend. This hook tends to secure the bait better.

I never really talked to anyone that loves them as much as i do, but who cares...these things have perfect balance for 5" senkos, and other larger style worms like the 6.5" cuttail, etc

right on! i use the owner 7/0 for the GY cut tail worms and the owner 11/0 for the 10" - 12" worms. good point.

I love the Texposer hooks and they are cheap too.

Gamakatsu EWG for me. I feel that my hookup ratio is VERY good.

I've also basically been using nothing but EWG hooks the past couple of seasons.

I use both Mustad and Gamakatsu in the 3/0 and 4/0... There sizes do seem to vary though.

I use Gamakatsu EWG hooks for all applications. They just work for me.

 Was having a problem with my hook up ratio,kinda out of the blue.A buddy suggested Gamakatsu's EWG hooks,that fixed the problem.It was over two years ago,and I have'nt looked back.I now use them exclusively for all plastics.

Owner EXG 3/0 and Eagle Claw Lazers, fro the straight old school worm hooks for me.

I use all kind of hooks, some Tru-turn hooks, Gammy EWG, Owner frog hooks, Owner 7/0 Oversize work hooks.  To me it depends on what is on sale and what kind of bait is going on the hook.  The majority of the time I use an EWG of some sort.

Gammy EWG for the most part but I bought some Gammy G-Locks towards the end of last season and really liked them better yet.

I fish a wide gap weedless, but regular exposed.
