can anyone explain this or point me to a link for a how-to.....I got a few baits (few bomber jerkbaits) with some old hooks in need of replacement...I picked up some size 4 gammys the other night but couldnt figure this out without hurting myself   :    and i couldnt find any instruction anywhere...thanks for any help

yeah, heres the kicker:  i have one already,  i think.....I have a rapala pliers but it makes no sense to me on how to use it :-[     aaarrrgghgh

Boy am I glad to here that.  I went out and bought some split ring pliers and I know I looked like I was stupid in my right ear trying to figure out how to use them.  I got the hooks changed but I don't believe it did the easiest way possible because it was a pain in the butt.  I was embarassed to ask how to use the things but now that I'm not alone I feel better.

HTF can you even change them without split ring pliers?

You'd have to have the fingers like the Dutch.  Then you run into the whole cabbage smell...

If you line up the ring with just right where the side opening starts and then using a knife blade spread open the ring and slide it around until it falls off it's easy and fast. You can put it back on the same way just use the knife blade to start it by spreading the ring open.

I can picture the ER Dr. sayin "I always thought those lure thingys were meant to catch fish, not fishermen!

I just use my finger nails, and I have about 50 Rat-L-Traps so I have changed numerous of trebles just with those baits ... man I would pay a little more if they would just put some Gamakatsu hooks on there from the factory ...

A small hemostat (spelling?) works too, clip it on one side and rotate the nose in between the ring and it will open to get the hook started as well.

Ouch....not to change the subject, but what it the best way to get a treble out like that.  Push through and cut the barb? I've only had this happen once and luckily it wasn't that deep and I coudl just yank it out.....still wasn't very much fun!

I have had a treble in my finger just like Turtle and that's how I got it out. I pushed the barb out the other side and my buddy cut the tip of the hook (with the barb) off with pliers/side cutters that I keep in my tackle box. I wasn't trying to change hooks on my bait though, I was trying to get my bait back from Mr. Bass. ;D

thats how the ER docter got the hook out of the back of my head last year, of course the numbing shots helped too

When you get the ring end open and the old hook eye started under the lifted end put the eye of your new hook over the end right behind the eye of the old one and you can chase the old one off while pushing on the new hook all in one operation.
