Hook Inventory

Featured Replies

I'm planning on stocking up on a useful inventory of hooks for use with soft plastic baits.  It has been a long while since I last did much bass fishing and there is a lot of new stuff available in hooks.

What would be the recommendations from you folks for a pretty versatile collection of hooks for the latest in soft baits and techniques.  Brands, sizes, styles, any other useful info appreciated.  I'd like to avoid getting too carried away with a gazzillion different hooks but I would like to have a reasonably complete inventory.

Owner and Gamakatsu in sizes 3/0, 4/0, and 5/0.  I use offset EWG hooks for all plastics.  Also for cranks some mustad triple grips.  That basically covers all of the hook needs I have for 95% of my fishing.

Just a heads up, towards the end of last year some people in the Northeast had issues Gammy Superline and G-Lock hooks. I had a few g-glocks bend out in fish on 8 pound line and snapped a few Superline hooks on 20 pound braid. Hopefully just a bad batch or something. :-/

I would recommend at least a 4/0 for Horny Toad or similar soft plastics due to the thickness of the bait. I think I am getting even better hooksets with Gamakatsu 5/0's with the deeper throat.

I like them Saber points also hard to find though i buy all i can when i visit Virginia walmarts

gammy #2/0 #3/0 #4/0 #5/0 extra wide gap will cover anything you want to toss out there. I have been playing around with the owner hooks but don't have enough use to say they are better or worse.

I "converted" to Owner hooks based on the posts of other BR members and a recommendation from a fishing buddy and I haven't been disappointed yet. I have 3/0, 4/0, and 5/0 Offset EWG worm hooks and I really like 'em. I also use Gamakatsu on occassion.

I agree and will preach on hook choice.  KVD's latest book illustrates that his worm fishing improved 100% by him fishing with Larry Nixon .  He explains in his book that Larry instructed him to use a straight shank hook versus an offset or EWG whenever he can get away with it.    This seems simple enough when you picture in your mind a bass eating your bait  and the result of a hook-set.  A straight shank provides the optimum hook angle to penetrate a bass's mouth.  Picture it in your mind and you will see...a hook's point going upwards towards the roof of the bass's mouth versus a hook point going horizontal straight to the lips is a decisive advantage.   VanDam says he moves up to an offset wide-gap for C-rigs which props the bait up off the bottom and offers less snag resistance than a straight shank.  He uses an EWG when cover is heavy and the latter hooks would result in more snags.  Food for thought...

Thanks for all the good info.  It is refreshing to see that I am not getting a wide variety of recommendations.  I am a big fan of the KISS principle.
