I'm from Wisconsin, or for those of us who are dictating, Wiscahhhsin.

I don't notice my accent until I visit other places, and they pick me off easily, I always thought we sounded like the new anchors, but I guess not.

The only thing I know we do in the north is run words together like the south, but only to make them one less syllable.  Case in point:

I live in a city called Chippewa Falls...thats Chipp-e-wa, unless you live in the city, then its Chipp-wa

I have always wondered if other languages have such distinct accents.  I know spanish from spain and spanish from mexico differ.  (my 5 years of spanish paying off in small dividends)  However they are from such a major geographical difference.  Anybody know of any other main accents from other languages?

I speak with a Southern accent,and it's not an issue with me.A Southern accent may sound ignorant to many non-Southerners,but don't be so narrow minded that you actually believe it.What you see on tv and on many movies is NOT an accurate depiction of what it's like and how we sound down here.

RRogue- anyone who has met more than 1 southerner should know that.  As a matter of fact, one of my most "successful" friends lives in Altlanta.  When he speaks, I certainly don't associate that accent with ignorance!!

Never judge by accent, you'll have very few friends in life.

I agree that the media loves to stereotype southerners as dumb. Just like all Italians are gangsters, all shyster lawyers are Jews, etc. etc. etc.

But I hate to admit it, but in my travels around the country over the years I have met many, many , MANY dummy dudes. But stupid Southerners and stupid New Yorkers/New jersiers, just plain sound dumber than the dumbest dummies from other parts of the country.

england has some different accents...its a really REALLY odd 'talent' i have to be able to tell different accents and match the region.

Try growing up with teachers from almost every English speaking country in the face of the earth; I had yankee teachers, southern teachers, british teachers, irish teachers and australian teechers.

i live smack dab in the middle of the country....kansas....and in all honesty i dont think the majority of us have accents....its very odd, though it might just be that we have a little bit of everything mix together, but with the exception of a few country boys, city "gangstas", and my grandma our language is almost what one might call normal....

now for a question i pose to any linguistics majors on the forum....when and why did we (americans) lose our weird english accent....what caused that change?

Man I grew up in Brooklyn and spent several years in New Orleans where I kind of fit in Now Im livin in NE Pennsylvaine and these people talk FUNNY! I cant find a good glass of WATAH anywhere ;D

I work in Sales/Customer Service for a company that sells here and abroad. If you people think our accents are things to behold... try to take on an international call sometime!!

I do enjoy it though. To have the opportunity to speak with such a variety of people is kinda' fun. I too can almost pick out the state (or at least the geographical regeion) that a customer is calling from. Except for one guy named "Vinnie".

I spoke with him for the longest time thinking he was from "Jersey" or somthing like that. NOOO!! PHOENIX ARIZONA!! Come on, no one is from there.... kinda like Vegas!! No one is from Vegas. (are they??)

At any rate I think it's cool that we can all be a bit different in our own way and still be a bunch of CRAZY Bass fishin' nuts. 8-)

AMEN my friend!!! I am not that far "south" from you here in Iowa, and I can most certainly tell when I have a Canadian on the phone. I rather enjoy it though... I like to talk to my friends up north.

I remember a sociology class in college where it was revealed that the advertising agencies in there quest to discover what a "real" american sounded like, actually identified a region in Nebraska, that they decided typifies "American English"  so I'm sorry guys.  Kansas is close but no cigar

Brits also have accents and even ways of talking depending upon the region.

a true southern accent is really close to a british one. check out any british actors doing american movies 90% of the time they will do a southern accent.

I aslo live smak dag in the boondocks here in VA. and I LOVE IT!!!! I've been told that I have a pretty thick southern accent and people used to make fun of it but pretty much everybody around here has at least a trace of a southern accent, heck our high school is the Lee-Davis Confederates

Lived in Alabama all my life ,I admit I have the southern slang, slur when speaking  and drink cokes, and if not drinking a coke  (carbonated beverages) it's called a cold drank.
