Spoiling for a fight

Featured Replies

The mods seem to hate it when tempers flare, like in post started by Dabnis in the Outings section, but I really enjoy it. So many people are so polite and self deprecating on the board, then a new guy says "screw everybody" and the gloves are off. Soon people start choosing sides and posting furiously. Nothing gets solved, nobody changes their opinions, but you get to blow off a little steam and hey, it's just plain fun - and sometimes funny!

But maybe that's just me (I've always been a sh#* stirrer). How do you feel?

Well, I guess I missed something but, I agree, a little heated discussion is good for the blood flow and its good to vent at times but, I think the mods do a good job of keeping it civil when it gets out of hand, or is on that path of getting out of hand. It never solves anything to get goofy.

I voted can't we all get along. Otherwise me ,Avid and Long Mike would have to start our own forum

As long as it doesn't go ad hominem and there is no profanity pretty much everything else is perfectly acceptable.

A public forum is not the place to allow your temper to flare.  Obviously, I am not a moderator, but when a healthy discussion degenerates into name calling and to casting aspersions, then its time to pull the plug.  If a person wants to berate a point, then do it via a PM.

At my age I am sorry to admit I would have to say I take it out BM

Arguments R fun!

The main problem is that there are a few people who have thin skins.

There is a difference between fighting and intelligent debate.  I agree with Daniel that it makes the forum interesting when people debate differing viewpoints in a respectful manner.  You notice the heat and something is definitely cooking but you keep it in the pan and don't start a fire.

I highly respect those with whom I can strongly disagree on a subject and, yet, still carry on a civil conversation.

Well guys, it rarely works out that way and after about 8 pages of the same crap restated six times, it gets old.

So, maybe nobody is satisfied but at some point it's over, just like the thread were all talking about!

Dude quit again and I don't think we're going to let him change his mind this time.

Though I'm not a moderator and have no say, IMO, I see far more threads that are not debates which repeat the same thing over and over.  I think some debates are cut off too soon.  I mean this as no disrespect to Glenn or the moderators and I'm sure they know that I accept their decisions.  If you agree with your friends on everything, either you, or your friends, are being disingenuous.

Am I starting a debate? ::)

GGEEZZZ!!!!!!!!!!   QUOTE from SENILE:  Am I starting a debate?

Well, I certainly see your point and it's difficult to say "when" is enough. The "general rule" is that when debates become "arguments" the "discussion" is ended. I know it's very subjective, but arguments are not allowed on this Forum. (I don't need any examples of this policy NOT being enforced, it's a gray area.) So, as you can see, there is no easy answer, but we don't take sides and we try to be fair.
