Really awkward situation last night

So last night I took Gidget and her son out to dinner.  he's a good kid, 17 years old and very respectful.  We went to one of our favorite restaurants in Palo Alto, called La 'Osteria.  Nice neighborhood, swanky little restaurant.

Across from our table were two couples enjoying dinner.  Mind you I didnt really pay them any attention since we were having a great time ourselves.  Halfway during our dinner, I noticed that the two guys kept looking back at our table, then whispering to each other.  Their wives had gotten up to go to the ladies room and were no where to be seen.  It became apparant that the two guys were making comments about Guille.

Now normally I would take that as a compliment, no big deal.  But they were obviously drunk, and in all honesty it was starting to tick me off a little bit.  I don't think Gidget or her son had really noticed anything, so I went on as if nothing was happening.  The fact that I had half a bottle of '02 Joseph Phelps in me didn't help though.  >:(

When the wives returned, everything went back to normal.  We enjoyed our meal, the knuckleheads stopped looking back at her.  When it came time for them to leave though, one of the guys could not keep his eyes off Gidget.  Whenever the wife wasn't looking, he was looking at her, up to the moment they walked out the restaurant.  Maybe the fact that he was with a buddy made him a little braver, I don't know.  I had made the decision that nothing was going to spoil our evening though.  We had a fantastic time and I got to spend a little quaity time with her son.

What would you guys have done?  I thought to myself had it just been the two of us, maybe I would have said something.  But again I go back to why let two idiots spoil our evening?

You cant help but notice a beautiful woman, sometimes you can't even help but stare.

There is most certainly a line though. I enjoy busting guys looking at my girl, cause she goes home with me and they go home lonely. But if I hear a lewd/ disrespectful comment, the gloves come off.

The last time it happened to me was at the lake of all places. Couple of drunks. I will not even hint at what was said, but it had me shaking mad. Unfortunately they came to the ramp at the end of the day at the same time I did. It was not pretty, I got my point across and he got a bloody/possibly broken nose. I felt righteous at the time. But it was not a smart thing to do. THat was six months ago, and hopefully it won't happen again.

If they were just looking, even leering, you did the right thing, especially if your judgment was at all hindered.

Robert,

I would have been proud to have any guys look at my wife.  But of course it depends on the type of guys.

My wife is a beautiful blond. A real blond.  And she acts like a blond which drives me nuts.

I would not have done anything unless there was gong to be an altercation in your situation.

If an altercation was looming, I would hope the resturant would have called the cops as I do not want to go "balistic" ever again and lose my temper.

I don't take prisoners nor believe in taking prisoners.  Learned that in Viet Nam.

But if you had to do something be sure it is fast and unexpected.  Go for the eyes with your fork or knife. That should defuse the situation very fast.

Otherwise, be proud that you have someone that turns other guys on. She is yours and I know she is very happy with you.

I agree with 4bizz.  I've caught guys looking at my wife before and I normally try to catch their eye and smile, or have even walked by and whispered, "She's good looking ain't she?" ;D  The only time I've gotten mad, and had to defend my wife's honor, was when a guy made a very rude and disrespectful comment.  I did like Jesus did and "cleansed the temple" (or was it cleaned his clock :-?).  I regretted what I did later, and wished I would have just talked to the guy.  Live, learn, repent.

Redline, in your situation, I think you did the right thing.

No doubt that I did the right thing.  If I was 10 years younger I may have not.  ;)  I just don't understand the mentality, I mean through his eyes, here is this family of three having dinner, and yet he still has the guts to do what he did.  With his wife there.  She's the one I feel sorry for.  Unbelievable.

Maybe they thought you were Pablo Escobar ;D

When they were looking you should have just giving them the and then the

But if they were older guys you should just let them look because thats all we can do know. ;D

Maybe they thought you were Pablo Escobar ;D

LMAO, you did the right thing redline. They were straddeling that line though. Now if they approach or start talking to her, well...

You cool fool 8-) I would just reassure my girlfriend that i have her back, and i respect her. Going over to 2 drunken idiots and maybe going to fists would have meade matters worse and set the wrong example for the young man You were right on Robert as usual:Consitency is the key :)

I have no patience or restraint ability in situations like that. The key is separating the two guys. I probably would've waited for one of the dudes to go to the restroom, politely excused myself and showed up right there with him, give him a hard look just to see what kind of response I got. If he had something to say, I'd address it one way or the other. If he wanted to drop 'em, we'd drop 'em, if not, oh well. He'd definitely get the message though. And if it did come down to a scrap, it would only be against the one guy, not both.

I hear you five, but considering the situation I did the right thing.  The LAST thing I'd ever want to do is set a bad example for Gidget's son.   Those morons will continue to be disrespectful to their wives.  Someday they WILL come across the wrong guy and that will be that.  Karma my friend. :)

Yeah, you probably did the "right" thing, but like I said, I have no patience or retraint in situations like that, especially with drunks. And you did ask what we would do. Meeting him at the restroom like that you have a less than 50% chance that it will end up in a fight. He really doesnt want to have to explain to his wife (or have you explain to his wife) why he's scrappin' in the restroom.  ;D

JUST MAKE SURE WHEN YOU ARE IN THE REST ROOM NOT TO TAP YOUR FOOT ON THE FLOOR< YOU MAY MAKE AN UNWANTED FRIEND

Great

You did the right thing by ignoring the situation and I tend to be able to do the same...however back in college there were 2 situations with female friends where some very blatantly disrespectful drunks got surprised then hit the floor :o

I consider myself to have quit the looker and I always have guys looking I just take it as a compliment. As long as they dont try and approach then I am fine I know who she is going home with.(weather she likes it or not) just jokeing my wife loves me to death.

I don't know.  Maybe it's my cologne.  Whenever my wife and I go out, I always notice that there are always a couple of really swell dressed guys staring at me.  :o ;D ;D

The fact that I had half a bottle of '02 Joseph Phelps in me didn't help though

Big mistake.

This never happens with Richard's Wild Irish Rose.  8-)

He's kidding, he drinks Inglenook White Zin  ;D

Seriously though, you made the right move.  I bet you enjoyed your weekend at home, much better than being down the station filling out reports and being on the phone trying to keep it out of the papers.

;)

I have been married for 19 years and with her for 23.  when I was in my 20's,  I used to confront guys that did that.   Probably all due to my own insecurity.  23 years later,  I am complimented by guys looking,  just don't cross the line.

I also have always had a rule even when I was young.  Never give the eye to any girl who is with someone else.  It is a matter of respect for all involved.
