stop signs and stoplights optional?

Featured Replies

I see a fair amount of people these days who just don't bother to stop for stop signs mainly. If it is the routine kind they just blow right through them.

I'm not talking about a non officially technical complete stop, I'm talking about the don't even slow down for it kind. Seems like more and more people are just not stopping

Could just be my outlook with me approaching 50 but how do you guys treat the stop signs?

Look forward to your comments FFI AKA Matt Crum

I hate one specific light. When I leave my house for UPS Monday through Friday there is one light I have to go to in order to get to work. I always hit it wrong. I have learned that it stays red for 8 minutes, then green for 45 seconds. So most mornings I end up parked at an intersection for 5 minutes or longer. And it is right in the center of town so I know there is a cop hiding somewhere. ::)

1.  I can't stand being told what to do by an inanimate object.

2.  I am not stupid.

3.  It's against the law to run a stop sign.

Therfore, I will drive through the intersection without stopping, provided that it is safe to do so and there are no cops around.

It's called using common sense.  Unfortunately, there are many, many people who are not smart enough to have common sense.   ;D

I always stop.

I was a teenage driver once upon a time.

I was a stuipd driver, a/k/a teenager.

The only sign I do not stop is the "T" intersection in my neighborhood where you can see for a block in each direction.

I do a Texas rolling stop at this intersection if no cars, people or dogs are coming in either direction.

Otherwise, it is S-T-O-P when you are supposed to stop.

I stop for every single one.I can't afford a ticket....lol

Cops hide out here,i saw one pop out behind a billboard once.Cops here don't care, you forget to turn your signal light on and they'll catch you for it.

Stop at all stop signs & redlights; tickets are a waste of money I could use to go fishing ;)

One of my buddies calls stop signs yield signs, he does a cali stop and rolls on through em. Me personally i will take that extra 6 seconds to stop and look and take the 100$ i save for not getting a ticket and buy some tackle or something useful. The main reason people don't stop is because there in a hurry to do nothing.

Amen, and I dont feel like getting in a wreck and it being my fault. 1-3 minutes isnt worth it.

There is one time I do the rolling stop.  It is down town St Louis when there is no one around.  I lock the doors, never stop, and have the 40 next to my side.   :o

I put 99% of the time. There is a stop sign at work, in an area that is closed off at night, that we check. I usually come to a slow roll for that one, otherwise I stop for all the others.

>:(  This is a really big pet peeve of mine.

I could have posted this in the "What grinds my gears" column, but I didn't think of it then.  Man, the people in my community are REALLY bad at not stopping at stop signs.  I've always wanted to just pull out and t-bone one of them one of these days.  They are especially bad at running them in our Wal-mart parking lot.  I just feel that it is our duty as responsible citizens to stop at them.  If we all ran them, we'd have chaos and accidents everywhere.  What I don't understand is that people seem to have no problem with running a stop sign, but they will sit at a red light even though there's no traffic coming there way?  What gives?  They're both inanimate objects (to borrow Mike's term).  I guess they think that someone might notice them running a red light.  Whether or not they stop at the sign is harder to prove, I guess.

All traffic violations to include stop signs & redlights, train guards, seatbelt (never where mine till i see a cop) tickets are a waste of money.  Any money given to any form of fine to a goverment official is a waste of good fishing / hunting / family fun time money

First f all I stop at them.

As food for thought though with gas prices the way they are does it make sense as a country to stop when 100% safe not to do so?

Like someone said this would probably bring chaos but ???

I always stop. Its a big problem in my neighborhood. Most people now slow down a little and blow threw the stop signs and certain stop lights are really getting bad. ALot of people forget that they need to let people turn at stop signs too. Some just stop and go.

I've almost been hit more than a few times and my dad was hit luckily he had his truck and nothing happened to him or his truck.

Plus as an added bonus alot of our intersections are now photo enforced so don't go through if the light is yellow.

Let me clarify my above statement.  I am talking about local neighborhood stop signs.  You know, the ones that have very little traffic?  Like I said, I don't like being told what to do by inanimate objects.  I also said that I am not stupid.  As was said by others, I slowly roll through it.  I do not blatantly disregard it.  As for red lights, I respect the message they send.  They tell me I'm going to get killed, or worse, kill someone else if I don't stop.  I stop.  As for seat belts, I wouldn't drive around the block without wearing one.  I'm not stupid.

Red lights always.  Stop signs I slow down untill I almost come to a stop but actually don't  and then preceed on.   What I hate is when your behind someone and they stop compleatly at a stop sign and sit there for what feels like a minute and look all around when you can see a mile each direction that nothing is coming.   In place's where visability is an issue I don't mind but if you can obviously tell there is nothing coming then I see no reason to stop completly.   I'm not advocating just blow right threw but do a rolling stop.     I also hate neighborhoods who think that by haveing a stop sign every 50 feet is going to be safe and slow people down when it actually dosen't .  I never stop at these unless there is kids another car coming or something of that nature.   Agin I only do rolling stops.
