What Makes a Man?

Featured Replies

Some of my ole' college chums and I were sitting around our lovely dining court (If only you all knew the sarcasm inflected in my thoughts right now) and we started talknig about what makes a man...at what point are we men and not boys anymore. We all were able to agree on one thing, age has little to do with it. Turning 18 or 21 or anywhere in between doesnt automatically grant one manhood... so what does?

Lets just hear all of y'alls opinions of this particular subject...

I'm not sure what the exact moment is but I do know that somewhere around the age of 25 your brain finishes developing.

Pop quiz:

Does anyone know what part of the brain is the last to develop and what does that part control.

Ahhhh.... PSYCH 100 all over again.... I believe you would be talking about the Prefrontal Cortex....

as follows from my handy dandy incrediblyoverpricedbecuasetheprofessoristheauthorandhewantsustoseehowsmartheiseventhoughhecantteachforspittle PSYCH 100 textbook:

""The prefrontal cortex, which governs the executive functions of reasoning, advanced thought

and impulse control, is the final area of the human brain to mature.""

Yeah, yeah I know I cheated a little bit, but you never said it wasn't open book...

The Frontal Lobes of the brain that help you make "rational decisions"

from KU's reply,...

What makes a man?

The decisions he makes.

(PS- what other board gets you 3 answers before 6:30 am????  NONE!! :) )

What makes a man?......

What he does, thinks, feels and decides when no one can see him.

Maturity is when what you NEED becomes more important than what you WANT.  JMHO

When you become "responsible".

Responsible for yourself, your actions, your thoughts and the well being of others.

8-)

Taking care of your responsibilities, on a daily fashion.Doing this without any fanfare, or expecting anyone else to notice it or make special mention of this. If you do that long enough you build up a sense of service to those who depend on you, humility and dignity 8-)

I learned these things from watching the 2 closest men in my life: My Father and my Uncle Anthony: I could never live up to the kind of men these guys were.

Still waiting for manhood here....got a house, a wife, a son, a job, one car payment... still get reffered to as "the skinny kid with the tattoo's"  :)

Maybe when I'm 50...

A wife "makes" a man,

do whatever she wants.

In my hood, I'm still "skinny white boy"

Doing the right thing by other people, not because you have to but because you want to....

That is no easy answer.    There are no text book answers that are the same.

Certain cultures vary.    Some religions define when you come of age.

Here in the United States, certain states declare that you can be tried as an adult at certain ages.  Doesn't mean you are.

You can die for your country at 18, and long ago, there were times your parents could sign for ya if under aged.

So a person can be deemed an adult without displaying traits that some of us say you need to display.

I don't care who you are.    If you can pay your own bills, and take of business legally, you are  an adult.

There are all types of men in this world,    Men who are serving time in prison, old and young adults.     What makes you a man don't matter.    Its how you handle your self at all times.

Simply put, he takes care of business, that business may be family or single, but does  so within the laws of the land.

I always figured, if he or she is old enough to be sent to war, you should be afforeded the respect and priveledges of such honors.   Afterall, we send men to war, not children.

Well put Matt Fly...

I would say Responsibility.  Once a guy starts to get me responsible, rather it be taking care/fixing something, paying bills, etc...  Pretty much does things on his own and doesn't have to ask someone else (parent/friends) to do something for him.  When your counted on for something and not the cause or a moocher.

That's my guess.

What makes a man? Having the strength to lift 500lbs. ;D
