your fishing superstitions

Featured Replies

Nothing that I would call a superstition or that I do religiously.  I do know that I never catch more than 2 fish without retying.  This includes any bream aka, bluegill, shellcrackers, etc..   Anyone have any plain old superstitions??  Same socks, or godforbid underwear you wear everytime??   ;D

YES I do have them.  I get dressed exactly the same way everyday, putting my shoes on in the same order, wearing my favorite hat, my same pair of polarized glasses carrying my same tackle boxes with my box of scents.  I drive the same roads to get there and setup my tackle in the same order.  If i do it exactly the same way i have a good day, if i get out of order i have a bad day...  The most important things is getting there at the right time too, it has to be the exact time not late but early is ok.  If i'm out of sync i may as well go home its that bad.  I just don't feel right and i lose my motivation and the day is lost...

I have a bad superstition about catching a bass on the first cast.  Seems that every time this happens I don't catch another for at least a couple hours, and sometimes that first cast bass is the only fish of the day.

These days when I hit the water I throw something "silly" for my first cast but even then I sometimes get bit.

no bananas in my boat... ever

I brought a banana on the boat while redfishing and I thought my guide was going to throw me overboard.

I have my lucky hat, and when ever I fish with my friend wes, we sing while were fishing, IDK why, bt we dont catch aything unless were singing. and it has to be a country song, like the fish dont like rap or rock....

Well Bigbill is maybe the only one of you more OCD than me.

I make sure I don't catch one on the first cast or last cast.  Wear the same lucky hat, same lucky shoes.  I have a rod that I bring with me whether I know I am going to use it or not.  Then there are the personal OCD fits that I have which take me about 10 extra minutes just to get out of the house and make sure the boat is hooked up right, etc.

I have never heard the banana thing.  What's the origin?

I usually take my weapon onboard for protection when out on the water, I have had two buddies of mine saying that was bad luck, having it on the boat. Anyone else ever heard of that?

I am very superstitious,

I believe that if I don't go fishing, I won't catch fish.

I believe that if I don't go fishing, I won't have fun.

I believe that if I don't go fishing, my boat's no use.

I believe that if I don't go fishing, I can't take my grandson fishing.

But my biggest superstition of all is

I believe that if I don't go fishing, I just wouldn't be happy.

I never, ever, take my landing net out before the first fish! Always wear my wedding ring! Never cast my lure with anything (grass, moss) on it, even a tiny piece on the eyelet!!!!

my dad told me that seieing a praying mantis was good luck.  but since then  they are my favorite insect.

I don't know if it's bad luck but depending on the water you're fishing it's a good thing to have...

Never eat at the Y the night before you go fishing.... :'(

catching a fish on the first cast is bad luck

never dip your hat into the water

Growing up, my Dad had a hat for most occassions.    One for catching the big cat, one for bassin, one for hunting.

He always wore old clothes and hats, he said they had "power" due to their age and experience.

In short, a hat never made a trip until it had at least 7 years of age on it.     Then, if that hat made a trip, it was on the first day, Dad always saved his power hats for when he thought the "Big Dog Would Walk".

Like Muddy last week, I miss my Dad often.    Threads like this just bring back those  memories.

I have no clue where the banana thing started but i check non boaters lunch boxes before they get in my rig and if they hae a banana they either have to eat it before we launch or they have to leave it in their truck til after we get back lol.  I know it may seem a little harsh but bananas are the worst luck, and I'm unlucky as it is

i have two superstitions, i have to wear my lucky fishing hat or i wont get bit at all, and that if i catch a fish the first cast i wont catch another fish for the entire day.

I always wear my Brooklyn Dodgers Cap, even if it's a 100 degrees!

Ok...

1. LBH got this in my head, you must see a deer or red fox on the way to the lake. I have found that turkey's are bad luck.

2. I must have Cheez-its with me whenever I fish.

3. If Billy Idol ever comes on the radio, your screwed, just turn around and go home.

4. Must pick feet off floor of truck whenever going over a bridge or railroad tracks.

5. While in the boat while sneaking under a bridge I have to touch both sides of it.

I have a bunch more, or maybe I just have OCD. :-/
