I'm looking to purchase a shotgun here in the next few months. It will be used for Dove and Rabbit. Possibly duck and geese. I'm looking to only spend about 3 or 4 hundred bucks.

Any hunters out there that can offer suggestions.

I have two Express Super Magnums, one I bought new for somewhere in the $300-$400 range and the other I bought used for $175.

I don't know anyone that regrets buying an 870.

I bought a brand new Mossberg at my local Wal-Mart and so far this gun has performed flawlessly for me. I use it for deer, turkey, dove, rabbit.... etc. It was very inexpensive and well worth the $287.95 I spent.

I think you will have a hard time finding a quality autoloader in your price range unless you find a good deal on a used gun.

EDIT:  Also, I have heard that some autoloaders tend to malfunction in colder weather.  I don't know that for sure as I dont own an autoloader but it is just something to keep in mind.

You can find remington 1100's and 11-48 and 58's used for around 200 to 250.  They are nice guns, about the only thing that goes wrong with them is the spring bushing but thats an easy cheap fix.  the 870's are nice guns but I never have liked pumps, I started out with a mossberg 500, then bought a winchester 1300? semi-auto, bought an over and under then now i have a 1100.  I haven't paid more than 250 bucks for any of the guns I have purchased.  Go to local gun shows and look around there are always deals to be found, you just have to find them.

It's not entry level but is one great gun.

If you are set on an autoloader, this is about the cheapest they come for a new one.  It is actually a Russian made gun (Baikal) that Remington imports.  They are not the most refined guns but are very reliable and will shoot 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" shells.

most malfunctions on any autoloader is due to cheap ammo. the next problem is cleaning the gun. i have a Browning B-80 that has to have hand loads or its not happy at all.

x2.  Bought my son a Stoeger auto from Dicks for Christmas and I wish I had bought him an 1100 (he wanted the Stoeger - not my idea).

All 3 pumps mentioned are excellent choices. The Remington is tried and true, the Mossberg is also, except that unless they changed it, has a single slide bar.  The Benelli Nova doesn't have any more or less functioning problems than others, plus it's smart looking.

If you decide to with any of the 3 that are chambered for the 3 1/2" mag, the Mossberg 835 is probably a bit more bulky.
