Tips for fishing in heavy vegetation

Featured Replies

A buddy and I are heading to a lake in northern Wisconsin that has heavy vegetation and heavy brush.  So far this year we have been using a lot of plastic worms with a jig head, but that will obviously catch us a lot of sticks and lettuce.

I do have a decent amount of top water baits such as a popper and a buzz bait.  What type of setup/lure/etc. is good for a scenario such as ours?

BTW, we will be using minnows and night crawlers on the side.

Try a 1/2 to 1oz flordia rig (pegged texas rig weight) on your favorite straight worm.  I prefer tru-tungston, but lead or brass works as well.  Lead is just huge though, and kind of defeats the purpose.

This is a technique to use if you want to punch through the grass.  If you're wanting to stay above it, try low weight or weightless rigs.  You can also try shallow cranks, which have been dynamite for me this year.

im not real good in deep water brush but in waters not much deeper than 8' id toss a rattling jig with a chompers trailer, in the grass a lipless crank bait.

Horny Toads, and senkos t-rigged weightless or with a tungsten weight. Tungsten's smaller profile comes through a lot cleaner.

Have been fishing a lake where the vegetation comes all the way to the surface ;). If the lake is like that you might try weightless Super Flukes. Have done pretty good with them. WELCOME to the forums!!!

Your bigger bass will be on the bottom so try pegged Texas rigs or Jig-N-Craw; 1/2 oz +  ;)
