What are the Southern States?

Featured Replies

Florida is upside down. North Florida is a Deep South State and South Florida is a northern state.

Northern Virginia is certainly not culturally "the south", but I'd say Southern Maryland is. However on the whole you'd probably include Virginia as a southern state and count Maryland as a northern one. I've been to West Virginia but not Alabama so I can't say if they're different.

At a certain point it really just becomes a matter of perception. In geographic terms it might be possible to divide but culturally it isn't that clear cut.

Correction, North and central Florida are deep south. South Florida is neither north or south. It is part of Cuba.

Ha Ha I agree, so true

to me, the southern states are the ones we whooped in the civil war but as a consolation prize, they got the longer bass growing season ;D

For work purposes, the southern states are all he ones listed under the southern section

Whooped? You do realize the South won more battles right? The North just had more men, money, and provisions.

to me WV has to be in the south. It cant be in the north and isnt in the mid atlantic or the mid west so were else could it be

I've considered the southern part of West Virginia is part of the south.  Our coalfields are full of the southern heritage people, however, when you get around Beckley and my area (near Charleston), the whole variety of people goes more towards a northen feel.  I guess as a whole, I would say the state is more southern than anything.  You can get biscuits and gravy anywhere in the state, as well as sweet tea.

You forgot about pepperoni rolls, which are only available north of Beckley.

Troutfisher is right , it's like two differant cultures with Charleston being the dividing line.

Hence, they won the war, i.e. "whooped" ya  ;D

Your point?

It truly is - and what truly gets me is when I'm on vacation and I'll say I'm from West Virginia, and they'll inquire about it, not aware that West Virginia is a seperate state.

i get the same thing when were on vacation and tell people we are from Delaware. You would be surprised at how many people ask if that is in Pennsylvania
