Laptop Vs Desktop

Recommended Posts

Getting a new computer. Was wanting a laptop, heard some bad things like being slower and extremley fragile. Any tips or deals from certain brands would be appreciated. Mostly going to use it for games and music.

If you want a powerful computer used for games with advanced graphics I would go with a desktop. If you are looking for a computer that you can tote around, and don't plan on doing anything too high end go with a laptop. What kinds of games do you play? What size laptop would you be interested in as well? If you play higher resource demanding games you will need to get a 17 inch laptop. The reason for a 17 inch is because they usually have the better graphic cards. If you want a 14.1 or a 15.4 you will most likely need an external graphics card.

If you are not a high end gamer a laptop is just more useful. You are not tied to a desk. Works out well to have a wireless network (as long as you have high speed internet). With it I can log in anywhere in my house or outside in the backyard. When I go on long drives with my daughter I play movies on it to keep her occupied.....

I just bought a new desk top that cost me like 1700 dollers. I can over clock a few of the games I play and be happy.heres the specs. I know the graphics card was upgraded to a g force for free. Some thing else was upgraded cant rember.  <a href="http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k115/tipptruck1/?action=view&current=scan0001-2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k115/tipptruck1/scan0001-2.jpg" border="0" alt="com"></a>

Aceman, I bought a laptop from Bestbuy a couple of weeks ago for $400.  I know computers and can assure you that almost any laptop these days will serve your needs.  I have two desktops in the house but wanted the laptop for the rare occasions when I was on the road.  Go for it!

Regardless of what you buy, buy something with at least 2GB of RAM.  3GB would be better, 4GB even better.

Vista is a resource hog.

Like Mr. Nugent said, RAM is very important.  Also, most computer's hard drives are overkill.  Unless you're making databases, you're not going to use 300GB.

I used to think the same thing.  That was before I filled up an 80 and a 120 in two years.

Buy as large as possible.  Tis better to have too much than not enough.

I guess this is true. My next computer will be this:

http://www.apple.com/macbook/

waste of money unless you are an image/video editor.

I do uses editing programs quite frequently, but don't tell yourself that you don't need a Mac just because you don't use editing software. I've used both Mac's and PC's, and the Mac outshines the PC about 90% of the time IMHO.

I started using Linux a few months ago.  I'm starting to like it better than everything.

Mac may be better in some ways but they are extremely overpriced. They sell a lifestyle that goes with their computers.

Dont forget to keep in mind weight, If you're buying a laptop portability is a top priority.  I feel like many people get lost in high specs and end up with a 10lb laptop which is less than portable.

Try to keep it around 5lbs

I just got a computer last week.  Desktop HP  Quadcore, 6G RAM, 640 hard drive w/ a 22" monitor and a printer for $600.

I was one of the idiots at Best Buy at 4:30 in the morning.   ;D

If what you need is portability then the lap top is a no brainer, but that 's if you really need that kind of portability. My sister has gone through 3 laptops in 6 years, all the time something in them breaks, if it ain 't the drive it 's the laser, if it ain 't that then it 's the screen, if it ain 't the screen then it 's the screen hinges, if it ain 't the screen hinges then it 's the keyboard and so on, you would think that ok she carries them around all the time but no, she has them as desktops but hates to have all the wiring, she desn 't like desktops ( they don 't look "neat and nice"  ::) ).

I 'd better go with a good desktop that can be upgraded easily and without having to dump a truckload of money.

If I bought a computer to match my life style it would be

A PENCIL AND A PIECE OF PAPER

When I was shopping computers a couple years ago I read an intersting article that was on Yahoo's homepage.  It really shocked me as it probably will you.

Laptops (in general) actually have a lower defective rate than desktops.

I bought a desktop after my previous experience with my laptop. ;D ;D
